To know her was to love her. She possessed all the qualities that constitute a pure Christian woman. To us it seems strange that God should see fit to remove one so useful from this world. She was still quiet young, being only 27 years old. How it fills my heart with pain to think of her dear little motherless children, who will never know the love and tender training of [their] mother. God help their father to raise them to be useful Christian men and women. Never more shall we see dear Mattie here; she has gone to join her mother, who proceeded her only a few weeks. We feel sure Mrs. Mathews was waiting at the Pearly Gates to welcome her precious daughter home. Today they are shining as “bright stars in His Crown.” A few days previous to her death she realized her latest sun was sinking fast. She requested that this song should be sung when she was laid to rest. She also expressed a desire to be buried beside her mother. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.W. Hammonds, of Griffin, at Zebulon Baptist church, Monday morning. Many relatives and friends were present to pay the last tribute of love and respect to this dear friend. - A Schoolmate - Concord, Ga., Sept. 21, 1897 [Transcribed 10 Feb 2008 Lynn Cunningham] Additional Comments: Mattie Mathews was a daughter of Dr. John Barnett Mathews. Born in Pike County Feb. 1870, she married John H. Carreker 10 February 1889 (in Pike County). She and John had 4 children, all of whom were living with their Mathews grandparents by the 1900 census.
