It seems that she was killed with a stick or other heavy instrument, her skull being broken open in two or three places. She was missed early Monday night and a search was commenced by her husband and neighbors which lasted all night. The body was found early Tuesday in a thick patch of weeds and briars. Sheriff D.S. Allen was notified. He and deputies and the coroner went to the scene. He found that a new negro in the community by the name of C.R. or “Dad” Davis had disappeared during the night. Search was immediately made and it was ascertained that Davis had gone to the home of Mr. Herd Legg about 11 o’clock Monday night and hired Mr. Legg’s son to take him to a place near Barnesville. The sheriff on learning this sent Will McDowell, Robt. Tucker, Walter Tigner, Andrew Knight and William Burks, all colored, in pursuit of Davis. The sheriff as soon as a coroner’s jury could be summoned, followed them with other officers. The posse of negroes found Davis a few miles West of Barnesville. When they approached, Davis jumped out a window and fled, but the crowd of colored men outran him and captured him about five minutes before the sheriff arrived. Davis was brought to Zebulon and placed in jail. He come from Florida about two months ago and it is said he is wanted in Lamar county and also in Alabama. The motive of the killing is thought to be robbery as the dead woman was known to have about $80 on her person late Monday. When found no money was found with her. The Davis woman was a former school teacher and was a good woman. Funeral and burial was at Mt. Olive colored Baptist church Wednesday.
