Elliott of Cochran Passes Mr. J.B. Elliott, prominent churchman, successful farmer, trusted friend, loyal citizen, kind neighbor, beloved husband and father passed suddenly to his reward early last Tuesday morning. Enjoying good health for many years, and with only about a half hour of struggle, Mr. Elliott succumbed to an acute case of indigestion at his home about three miles north of Cochran between three and four o’clock Tuesday morning. He enjoyed a hearty supper the evening before, and no one suspected any indisposition until early Tuesday morning. Arising because of his discomfort at an early hour he entered his wife’s bedroom, who ministered to him with such remedies as were available. Twice his oldest son Zack was sent for the doctor, but ere he could leave the premises, his pain would be lessened and the call for the doctor would be cancelled. Then came the final struggle and the end was at hand. “He had fought the good fight,” now he has “finished his course,” and by all who knew him best it was confidently affirmed, “He has kept the faith.” Mr. Elliottt was 46 years of age, a native of Pike county, but has been a citizen of Bleckley county for the past 19 years. For seventeen years he has been happily married to his devoted wife, formerly Miss Nettie Legg. Four children are left to comfort her, Zack, a son 14 years of age; Grace, the daughter, 12 years old; Marvin, a younger son eight years of age, and little Benjamin, the youngest child, four years old. Three brothers and three sisters are left of the original family of eight: Mr. T.Z. Elliott, of Barnesville, sheriff of the county; Mr. C.C. Elliott, of the county, near Barnesville, and the oldest brother, Mr. J.W. Elliott, of Williamson, Ga. Mrs. Lizzie Phillips, of Dothan, Ala.; Mrs. Emma Harris, of Reidsville, and Mrs. J.W. Sykes, of Barnesville. An older sister preceded him some four years ago. Early after moving to this county (Bleckly [sp]) Mr. Elliott became a member of Evergreen church, and when moving nearer Cochran, he became a member of the First Baptist church of this city. For years he has served as deacon of his church, and at the time of his decease he was the beloved Superintendent of the Sunday School, and also represented his church on the Executive Committee of the Pulaski-Bleckley association. Only last week he spent the greater part of the week representing his Sunday School and church at the Southwide Baptist Sunday School Conference at Greenville, S.C. Few men of the church were so much beloved as Brother Elliott, and none will be missed more. In the home, the church, and the community, he was honored and loved. Who could as for more? The funeral was held by request at the First Baptist church at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday. Many beautiful floral offerings, a house filled with respectful sympathizers, and a spirit of universal sorrow characterized the simple funeral services. Interment was in Cedar Hill cemetery. The deacons of the church served as pall-bearers. Bro. Elliott has passed on to higher service, our loss is Heaven’s gain, and his many admirers have better reason then ever to “Think of the Home over there.” - Cochran Journal (Transcribed 12 March 2010 - Lynn Cunningham) Additional Comments: James Benjamin Elliott b. 18 Sept 1881, Pike County, Ga d. 24 Jan 1928, Bleckley County, Ga.
