Slade Dead. James Madison Slade, one of the oldest citizens of Zebulon, and of Pike county, passed away Monday morning, November 7th 1921, after a comparatively short illness, though his general health had been feeble for sometime. He was borned in Pike county, two miles south of Zebulon, January 27th 1839. On September 15th, 1859, he married Pelletia Winfred Vaughan. To this union were borned nine children, by seven of whom he is survived: Mrs. W. E. Powell, of Griffin; Adel Slade, Orlando, Fla.; J. J. Slade, Zebulon; Burton Slade, Griffin; Mrs. P. M. Sullivan, Zebulon; Miss Julliet Slade, Zebulon; and Colquitt Slade, Jacksonville, Fla. He united with Mt. Olive Baptist Church on a profession of faith in September 1861. In 1872, he moved his membership to the Zebulon Baptist Church, where it liked only some months of having been for fifty years. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in the latter part of 1861, as a private and was assigned to the 27th Georgia Regiment, serving under General Hoke. Before the war closed he had been promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant. As an example of his faithfulness to duty, on one occasion he was in charge of a certain bridge and had been given orders not to allow any passing across the bridge whatever. General Lee and his staff desired to cross but in order to be sure about the matter he required them to secure the necessary papers and was commended for his act by General Lee. In the death of Mr. Slade, Pike county has lost one of it most honored citizens and with the members of his family, his surviving comrods of the sixties his church, and a host of friends mourn his passing.
