Harris webmaster@theharrislegacy.com May 8, 2004, 1:40 pm The Tattnall Journal, June 1926 IN MEMORY OF DR. J. C. HARRIS To our beloved Dr. Harris we have had to say “Farewell.” He has crossed the threshold into the great and silent beyond; his life was a blessing to all with whom he came in contact, and he leaves a host of true friends to mourn his passing. Dr. Harris was truly a great and good man. He dedicated his life to the service of mankind, and especially the poor. He was as near a true Christian as could be found anywhere and it seemed that his great heart full of love fairly reached out to all humanity with the single purpose of making the world better. He was firm in his stand for righteousness, yet would defend the poor wrong-doer who through ignorance had erred. His love for little children was one of his outstanding characteristics and he was never happier than when in their midst. No such things as selfishness or greed ever entered into his life, on the other hand he would disfurnish himself for the comfort of others less worthy. Nothing could be said that would add to the esteem in which this good man was held, for his life was nearly a perfect one. The Good Book says: “Greater love hath no man than he who gives his life for another”. And now, to his heartbroken widow, I would say be thankful to God for companion; and to his children I would say, follow the footsteps of your father and you will entwine yourselves in the love of your fellowman. And, dear friend, while we give you up with bowed heads and tear- dimmed eyes we know that eternal rest is your reward. JOSHUA BEASLEY Dr. J. C. Harris, well known and beloved Reidsville physician, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ferris Thomas, in Atlanta last Saturday morning at 2 o’clock. No one in this community was more loved and respected, and the news of his passing was a distinct shock to everyone, and brought sadness and deep regret in every heart. He was fifty eight years of age, and had been a resident of this city for about four years, moving here from Collins where he had been practicing for about ten years. He was born and reared in Pike County, near Zebulon, and his remains were carried there for burial beside the body of his father and other kinsmen and relatives. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. L. Harrison, pastor of the Collins Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Hartsfield, pastor of the Lakewood Heights Baptist Church of Atlanta. A crowd of sorrowing friends and loved ones, estimated at between seven hundred and a thousand, gathered at New Hope Church, near Zebulon. Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock to pay the last homage to the dead, fittingly portraying the deep love everyone who knew him held for Dr. Harris. Many and beautiful were the floral offerings surrounding the casket. Among them were one from the brothers, one from the children, one from the family, one from the Tattnall County Medical Society, of which he was president, one from the City of Reidsville, personally presented by Mayor D. B. Sumerford, and Councilmen H. F. Southwell, R. N. Odum and L. M. Rhoden; and one from the Ku Klux Klan of Atlanta. Among those attending the funeral from this section were Dr. T. C. Thompson of Vidalia and Dr. J. C. Collins of Collins, representing the Tattnall County Medical Society; Major D. B. Summerford and Councilmen H. F. Southwell, R. N. Odum and L. M. Rhoden, repsenting the City of Reidsville, R. M. Stanley, of Vidalia; W. H. Collins, J. H. Williams, Rev. E. L. Harrison, and Roy Williams of Collins. Surviving Dr. Harris is his widow, and four children: Mrs. Ferris Thomas of Atlanta; Miss Gladys Harris and Murrell Harris of Reidsville, and Roy Harris of Collins. Dr. Harris had been ill for about three months and it had been known that his condition was critical most of that time. A slight rally would encourage the family to hope that complete recovery might be expected, only to be followed by a relapse shortly afterwards. About a month ago he was carried to an Atlanta hospital where he seemed to be improving and upon his own insistence he was carried out to the home of his daughter there. His improvement proved to be only temporary and he began to slowly sink, and the end coming last Saturday morning early.
