Mrs. Matilda Holmes Dies

Funeral services were held Saturday morning for Mrs. Matilda Harden Holmes, 
98, who died Friday morning at her residence. The services were conducted at 
her home, the Rev. J.E. Parker, pastor of the First Methodist Church, and the 
Rev. Homer Bush officiating. Interment was in the City Cemetery. 

The funeral was unusual in that it was attended by four generations - 
children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. 

Mrs. Holmes was the wife of the late John D. Holmes, whose father was one of 
the pioneers of Barnesville and gave to the city the land on which Gordon 
Institute stands, the cemetery and the lot for the First Methodist Church. 
Before her marriage, Mrs. Holmes was Miss Matilda Harden, daughter of a 
wealthy antebellum planter of Troup county. When she came to Barnesville as a 
bride there were only three houses in the place. She was one of the few 
Confederate war mothers of Georgia and last year was presented a medal by the 
U.D.C. in recognition of that fact. 

She is survived by one son, Josiah F. Holmes, and one daughter, Miss Virginia 
Holmes, both of Barnesville; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren 
and by several great-great grandchildren.
