Mrs. Mary Howell Passes to Her Reward

Mrs. Mary Howell died Saturday night at eight o’clock at the home of her 
daughter, Mrs. S.S. Barrett near Zebulon, being eighty-four years old. She was 
ill with gastritis only four days and up to the attack of the sickness which 
resulted in her death, she was in good health considering her old age.

She was born in North Carolina in March 1828 and came to Georgia with her 
parents who settled in Spalding county when quite a young girl. She was married 
to William W. Howell in Spalding county in 1853 and settled near Lifsey 
Springs. Her maiden name was Mary Knight.

Her husband enlisted in the confederate army as a member of Co. G., 66th Ga. 
and died in the service at Marietta, Ga. in January 1864. He left the subject 
of this sketch a widow with eleven children. To raise this large family of 
children and especially at such a time as in reconstruction days, was indeed a 
tremendous undertaking. But she set about this duty with great zeal and 
Christian fortitude. Her oldest child, Mr. James H. Howell, now an honored 
citizen of the county returned home at the close of the war after four service, 
and gave her all the assistance he could in the capacity of a father of the 
family. This good woman toiled without ceasing and without complaint to make 
provisions for this large family of children. She reared them under a Christian 
influence and their lives and character are today a living testimonial to the 
many excellent qualities of their mother. She lived to see her eleven children 
grown and raising families of their own. The first break in the family circle, 
after the father’s death, occurred two years ago in the death of her son Mr. 
W.E. Howell.

In early life the deceased united herself with the church and lived a pious, 
Christian life. She was not demonstrative but lived her religion, doing all the 
good she could she could, charitable to all. She was devoted to her children 
and they to her. In her old days it must have been a source of much joy to her 
to reflect upon a well spent life, a part of which was lived in trying times 
and under adverse circumstances. None ever entered her home without a warm 
welcome nor left without feeling the warmth of a gentle, Christian character. 
She loved the church and always attended when health permitted. Her unselfish 
solicitude for her friends and loved ones was always evident and while she has 
always continued to enjoy their society, she has for several years, realized 
that her active life was about over and with resignation has awaited the Divine 
call to eternal life. Truly a good woman has gone to her reward.

She was the mother of eleven children, ten of whom survive her, namely, J.H. 
Howell of Zebulon; Mrs. Mary Rucker, of Barnesville; S.A. Howell, of Lifsey; 
Mrs. Amanda Bowden, of Anniston Ala.; Mrs. Sarah Storey, of Lifsey; Mrs. 
Adaline Marshall, of Oakland; Mrs. Jane Langford, Lafayette, Ala.; W.E. Howell, 
of Zebulon (deceased); Mrs. Catherine Calloway, of Sunny Side; Mrs. Ida 
Barrett, of Zebulon and Sheriff C.L. Howell, of Thomaston.

Impressive funeral services were held at Fincher’s church of which she was a 
member on Sunday afternoon and conducted by her pastor, Rev. Mr. Davis, of 
Milner, after which all that was mortal of this good old mother in Israel was 
tenderly laid to rest by the side of her devoted husband, where she now sleeps 
in peace. The interment was in the Mangham burial ground near Beaulah [sp] 
church.
