W.P. Hemphill Dies at His Home in Griffin Last Friday Rev. W.P. Hemphill died in Griffin last Friday after an illness of some months of Bright’s disease. He was born in York’s district South Carolina in 1842 and was 64 years old at his death. He served the Confederacy with distinction during the civil war as a member of Wheeler’s Calvary. He moved to Pike county in 1866 and was married that year to Miss Josephine Smarr and lived in this county near Milner until last November when he moved to Griffin. For a number of years he was state evangelist for the Presbyterian domination and did effective work for his churches. He was well known all over Middle Georgia and was held in high esteem and his death is regretted by friends and acquaintances. He is survived by his wife and eight children, Mrs. D.P. Blake, of Concord, Mrs. Henry Brandenburg of Haralson, Herbert Hemphill of Atlanta, Misses Gertrude and Agnes and Ed Hemphill of Griffin, and Will and Emmett Hemphill of this county. He has other relatives who also have the sympathies of all. He was buried in Griffin Saturday morning with Masonic honors. The funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian church by Revs, Hanna of Thomaston and Dozier of Carrollton. (Transcribed by Lynn Ballard Cunningham 9/7/02)
