Third Victim of Automobile Head-On Collision Which Occurred Between Auburn and Opelika, Ala., December 27. Mr. J. M. Means, Sr., 65 years of age, died Monday evening at 5:45 o'clock in a hospital at Opelika, Ala., from injuries sustined when his car and the car of Mr. Lewis Armistead, of Decatur, Ga., met head-on on the Opelika and Auburn, Ala., highway. Mrs. J. M. Means and Mr. Armistead were also victims of the accident while Mrs. Lucy Howell and two children received minor injuries. Mr. Means suffered a broken arm, as well as seven broken ribs and an injury to his lung. Mr. Means was Zebulon's and Pike County's leading citizen. He was born and reared near Meansville--this town being named for his father--and since early young manhood had been a leading spirit in the development of Pike county. He was known as a man with a splendid understanding of economic conditions and was relied upon by the people of the county for advise on practically every subject. At the time of his death he was president of the Zebulon Ginning & Fertilizer Co., a director in the Bank of Zebulon, held large farming interests throughout the county and was more or less interested in other enterprises of the county. Besides being one of the county's best known civic leaders he was a gentleman of sterling character and a devout Christian, being a member of the Zebulon Methodist church, President of the Men's Bible Class and of him it can truly be said "he lived the doctrine he preached." Before establishing the Zebulon Ginning & Fertilizer Co., Mr. Means was one of Pike county's leading merchants, operating one of the largest mercantile establishments in the county for years. Retiring from the mercantile business sometime in the early 1920's he took over the ginnery management and establishe dthe Fertilizer factory. Funeral services for Mr. Means were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Zebulon Methodist church. Rev. G. C. Burtz, the pastor, in charge. Interment occurred in the churchyard with R. F. Strickland Co. in charge. Mr. Means is survived by three sons, J. M. Means, Jr., and Howard Means, of Zebulon, and H. S. Means, of Atlanta; two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Howell, of Zebulon and Mrs. Howard Marsden, of Flushing Long Island, N. Y.
