Lieut. A.J. NEAL, of Perry’s Battery, has fallen at his post of duty. A missile from the enemy’s sharpshooters has laid low one we honored and loved. Lieut. Neal was born in Pike county, Ga., and at the time of his death was twenty-six years of age. From his earliest years he was zealously devoted to literary pursuits. He graduated with honor at the University of his native State and afterward passed a year at the University of Virginia. Having determined on the practice of law as a profession, he entered the law school at Lebanon, Tennessee, where he graduated with distinction. Not long before the breaking out of the war, he located at Micanopv [?], Florida, to commence that career of usefulness for which his long course of preparation had so eminently fitted him. At the first call to arms, and before the first gun had been fired in defence of Southern rights, he enlisted to maintain the freedom of our institutions, and to guard the honor and sanctity of our homes. During this long and bloody struggle, so faithful has he been in the performance of his duties, that he has not been more than sixteen days absent from his command. As a scholar he was ripe, finished and elegant; as a soldier he was active, vigilant, brave and chivalrous; as a friend he was warm, sincere and devoted; and as a son and brother he was most affectionate and true. His remains have been interred near his early home, and the grave will be bedewed by the tears of his bereaved and mourning relatives and friends. His blood, shed in defence of our sacred rights, is the rich heritage of his State and Country. - C.
