Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, September 17, 1897 In Memoriam On the morning of the 11th of August while the eastern sky was still tinted with the purple crimson and gold of a glorious sunrise, that grim Reaper, Death, invaded the home of Mrs. G.V. Banks and took from it the youngest child and only son, Jesse Croghan Banks. Had he lived until the third of Oct., he would have been eleven years old. For many weeks he battled with typhoid malarial fever. Finally he took pneumonia, and all the kind and loving hands could do was done, but the hands of death could not be stayed. The little one suffered intensely during his illness, but with him now “life’s fitful fever o’er, he sleeps well.” We know that God in his infinite mercy doeth all things for the best, or he would have lingered yet awhile before calling the dear one home. On the day following his falling asleep, he was laid to rest in the old family burying ground near Beeks. The newly made mound was covered with many beautiful floral offerings. A home is left desolate; a mother, with an aching heart, grieves for an only son; three sisters mourn the untimely death of an only and well beloved brother. They listen for the coming of a well-known footstep and hear it not; a loved voice is stilled. (Transcribed 07/29/03 Lynn Cunningham) Additional Comments: Jesse Croghan Banks is buried at the Coggins Family Cemetery. He was the son of John J.
