Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, December 22, 1899 Judge J.S. Pope Dead Judge J.S. Pope died at his home here last night at eleven o’clock. He had been in feeble health for about two years, but recently was thought to be growing stronger. Sunday he was stricken with paralysis. His children, Mrs. W.B. Baker of Atlanta, Mesdames W.B. Merritt and W.E. Thomas of Valdosta, Mr. Ernest Pope of Savannah and Mr. Cadesman Pope of Atlanta, were summoned to his bedside and were with him when death came. Judge Pope was one of the best known lawyers in the state and a gentleman of wide-spread popularity. He was for a number of years judge of the county court of Pike. He gave up that position in 1892 to run for the state senate. He was elected by a handsome majority and served with distinction. He was at one time a candidate for superior court judge but was defeated by Judge J.S. Boynton by a majority of only 3. Judge Pope was 53 years of age. The funeral services will occur at his home this afternoon at 3:30 o’clock conducted by his pastor, J.P. Burgess. The remains will be interred in the family burying ground near his home. Judge Reagan this morning in making an announcement of his death and funeral paid a splendid tribute to the deceased and stated that he would adjourn court at 3:00 in order to allow the members of the bar and those in attendance upon court to attend the funeral and burial services. Judge Dupree made a motion for the judge to appoint a committee to draw resolutions on the death of Judge Pope and it was unanimously passed. Memorial services will be held at the Methodist church Sunday morning at 10 o’clock. Judge Pope leaves a loving wife and seven devoted children to mourn his death. His death has cast a gloom over the entire town and the friends of the deceased extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones.
