Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, February 23, 1900 Miss Annie O. Howell Dead One of Zebulon’s Sweetest and Best Christian Young Ladies Passes Away Wednesday morning, the sad news of the death of Miss Annie Howell, which occurred Tuesday night at 4 o’clock spread over our town and cast a gloom over our people. Her death was not entirely unexpected as she had been in bad health the past two years, but with a cheerfulness and brightness that was one of the traits of her beautiful character, she did not burden those with whom she came in contact with complaints, and even to the last all were hopeful that she would soon be restored to perfect health. Miss Annie was a beautiful young lady both in character and in person; with a nature that was free form affectation, she lived her short life happily and as a Christian. She has been taken from our midst to be transplanted into a brighter and happier sphere. She has left us an example of inexpressible value. She has exchanged the laurel for her incorruptible crown that fadeth not away. Though lost to light, she is still to memory dear, and with her friends and those who knew her intimately, this memory will become dearer and sweeter as the years go by. We have enshrined her in our heart of hearts, and can leave her in the hands of "One who doeth all things well," and where her sufferings and pain are at an end. The funeral services which occurred at the Methodist church yesterday, consisted of reading of the scripture by Rev. A.B. Pope and J.P. Burgess, several beautiful and appropriate songs sung by the choir, a short talk on her life by Rev. Pope and were concluded with fitting remarks by Rev. Burgess, who announced that memorial services would be held by the Epworth League Sunday night. (Transcribed 09/25/03 Lynn Cunningham) Additional Comments: Annie Howell was a daughter of James H.
