Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, April 6, 1900 Capt. Turner Dead Capt. B.M. Turner, one of Pike’s best known citizen’s died at his home in Barnesville, Tuesday morning. Capt. Turner’s death was due to Bright’s disease. He had suffered for five years from his complaint. About six months ago the malady took a sudden turn for the worse. He was born in Barnesville in 1838, and graduated from Mercer University in 1858, later graduating from Lumpkin Law school in 1861. He entered the service as color bearer of the Barnesville Blues and was promoted to captaincy. At the close of the war, he went to Forsyth and was president of the Hilliard Institute. Later he practiced law in Barnesville and there established a planing mill with W.A. Prout. In 1892 he was elected president of the board of trustees of Gordon Institute and held this position until his death. He was until recently a member of the board of education. Benjamin M. Turner, 5th Sergeant. June 29, 1861; appointed sergeant major this battalion Sept 2, 1861; promoted to 1st lieutenant June 28, 1862; transferred to Co. B, 4th Battalion, Georgia Sharpshooters, as 1st lieutenant May 4, 1863; to Co. C, same battalion and elected captain, May 5, 1863; wounded Chickamauga, Ga., Sept. 19, 1863; captured Nashville, Tenn., Dec. 16, 1864; released Johnson’s Island, O., prison June 17, 1865.
