Family Bible
Mrs. Elizabeth D. Milner -- Truly a mother in Israel has fallen asleep in 
Jesus.  The subject of this memorial notice was the daughter of George and 
Susan Willis, and sister of Col. Richard Willis, of Greene county, and James 
Willis, of Wilkes county. she was born in Wilkes county, Ga., August 18th, 
1796, was married to Rev. John H. Milner April 4th, 1814 and died (at the 
old "homestead," in Pike county, Ga., now owned by her eldest son, George W. 
Milner) June 24th, 1885, aged nearly 89 years.  She survived her lamented 
husband a little over 28 years.  She had been a Baptist 45 years, having 
enjoyed a hope in Christ many years before she ventured to unite with God's 
people.  She was the mother of eleven children all of whom lived to be grown 
and married, and nine of them are still living.  The writer has known her from 
his boyhood and has been blessed with her presence in his family for nine 
years, during her widowhood, and a better woman he has never known. She was 
eminently domestic, industrious, quiet, modest and pious.  She was not 
demonstrative, religiously, but constant and devoted to Christ and his cause --
liberal in her contributions to missions and to the poor.  She spent the last 
years of her life with her son, and finally fell asleep in Jesus without a 
struggle, without a groan.  It appears remarkable that for days before she died 
she spoke of her parents, would call them, and seem to be expecting them to 
come to see her.  What does this mean? that a saint of 89 years should still 
feel as a little child in relation to her parents!  An honored Christian woman, 
widow of an honored minister, has passed away.  Will her children and her 
descendants meet her in the land of rest--the blessed home of the redeemed?

To close in peace our mortal days,
Safe to the heavenly Cau?an brought,
To join the anthems angels raise!

To sleep in Jesus what delight!
Increasing still, and ever new.
To mingle with the saints in light,
And be as pure and happy too!"

These obituaries are glued into a Bible that belonged to Leola Putnam Porter 
and a scanned image of these was sent to me by Don Porter, her great grandson.
