Friday, May 22, 1903 George H. Warthen of Piedmont Killed Mr. Geo. H. Warthen, a prominent young merchant and farmer, of Piedmont, this county, was killed about 7 o’clock Tuesday morning near Lary’s Lake, about one mile from Mr. Warthen’s home in a large pasture. He was shot in the back of his head with a shotgun, and a hole four inches wide and six inches long was made. He was then taken up, dragged through a wire fence and thrown in a dirty little stream which was surrounded by canes. It was Wednesday about 11 o’clock before he was found. His body was removed to a negro church near where the murder was committed and the coroner sent for. He arrived early yesterday morning and empanneled [sp] a jury. They were in session for several hours and after examining several witnesses, they returned a verdict stating that the deceased came to death caused from gun shot wounds inflicted by parties unknown to them. Mr T.Z. Jones was foreman of the jury and F.M. Stafford secretary. Mr. Warthen was an exceptionally bright young man, full of energy, and had made a success of merchandising and farming. Mr. Warthen was a graduate of Gordon Institute, of Barnesville. He was about 23 years of age and had a promising future. The people are very much wrought up over the murder and no amount of money will be spared by his friends and relatives in order to bring the guilty ones to justice. The funeral services conducted by Rev. N.W. Hurst occurred yesterday afternoon at 8 o’clock at the family burying ground about three miles east of Piedmont and was attended by more people than we ever saw at a funeral in the country. The many floral offerings also went to test his popularity.
