Friday, September 11, 1903 Obituary Miss Mary Gardner, daughter of F.M. and P.L. Gardner, was born in Monroe county, October 1, 1882, and died in great peace in Griffin, Ga., June 17, 1903. Miss Mary came of a noble ancestry. Her parents removed from Monroe to Pike county and settled near Lifsey, Ga., 1883. Fourteen years later they moved to Griffin. Here she grew up and developed into a rarely beautiful character. Her death was a home-going, a passing sweetly away from earthly joys and sufferings to her heavenly reward. The life history of this estimable Christian woman is brief but beautiful. Never of apparently vigorous habit of body, she was during her latter years the subject of much physical affliction and suffering. By reason of this affliction she was deprived of the privilege of the house of God, and shut into the sacred and loving surroundings of home. Here she maintained a patient and cheerful spirit and enjoyed the company of visiting friends, and received the watchful and tender ministries of her loving parents. With a cultured mind and a heart developed by social advantage of high order, she was well equipped for life. Thinking perhaps a visit to the country would improve her health, she and her mother went to visit her uncle near Liberty Hill, Ga., but alas! this beautiful life, full of promise came to a sudden close. Patient, uncomplaining, resigned and hopeful, she waited at the margin of the last river. She repeatedly testified that she was ready for the change. “I am not afraid to die,: she said to her Mother. Then smiling she fell on sleep. “Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep, From which none ever wake to weep.” May the good influence of her life abide with her loved ones forever, and may they all meet in heaven.
