Buchanan Buried Sunday Near Zebulon Was one of Pike County's Most Respected Citizens - Was Deputy Sheriff for Twenty-Five Years. Funeral services for Mr. Rufus Alonza Buchanan, 81 years of age, were held from the Zebulon Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. O.C. Burts, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. G.H. Bailey, former pastor. Interment occurred in the Wood family cemetery, near his home. Mr. Buchanan was probably one of the best known citizens of the county, having served as Deputy Sheriff of Pike county for twenty-five years and for a number of years served Pike county as coroner. At the time of his death he was operating his farm near Zebulon and was known as one of the best farmers in the county and up until last year had not grown any cotton on his place. Mr. Buchanan died at his home Saturday afternoon after an illness of several months. For a number of years he resided in Zebulon and gathered around him a long list of friends among both the young and old, who respected him highly during his residence here and after his removal to his country home their love for him continued as time began to bear down on his body. Citizens of Zebulon were not the only ones to love and respect Mr. Buchanan, citizens in every nook and corner of the county were numbered among his friends as well as in Griffin, Barnesville, Thomaston and other points in this section. His death brings sadness to this newspaper because of the close affiliation of the editor to Mr. Buchanan and it is our belief that it has always been his desire to do the things that were to contribute to the best interest of the whole county. Our desire to express our feelings at this time is muffled by the sadness of our heart and we can only extend to the bereaved widow and children our heart-felt sympathy. Besides his widow, Mrs. Mary Ella Wood Buchanan, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. S.A. Weaver; four sons, Coley R., W. Otis, Joe S., and John H. Buchanan, all of Zebulon.
