Barnesville, Georgia, May 10, 1906 W. T. Chapman Dead Again we are called upon to pay tribute to the passing of one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens. At the home of his son, Mr. C.A. Chapman, where he had gone for a short visit, died on May the 3rd, Mr. W.T. Chapman after an illness of only a few weeks duration. Mr. Chapman was born December 6th 1830, thus making his pilgrimage 76 years. The most of this time was spent in Pike county, where he led an upright life devoted to his family, his fellow man, and his God. At the time of his death he was making his home with his son, Mr. J.R. Chapman of Barnesville, but had gone for a short visit to Mr. C.A. Chapman and it was there that his summons came to depart. Surrounded by all his children except two in far away Texas, he peacefully passed to his reward. His going reminded one of the Patriarch of old. Knowing that the end was near, he took leave of his children one by one, and fondly embracing his wife "was gathered unto his people." Mr. Chapman was a Confederate veteran, having enlisted in the early 60's and served through the War. While in action he received a wound which he carried through life, an honorable insignia of his loyalty to his country and the cause he believed to be right. Mr. Chapman was married three times. First to Miss Pastiam [Portia Ann] Lifsey of Pike county, Oct the 25th 1854. This union was blessed with the following children: J.T. and B.A. Chapman of Hubbard city, Texas, W.S. Chapman, of Pitts, Ga. J.J. Chapman and Mrs. C.O. Cannafax, of Pike Co. J.R. Chapman, of Barnesville and Miss Sallie Chapman of Atlanta. The second marriage was with Miss Carrie Lee Harrison of Harris county Oct 5th 1865. This union was blessed with the following children: C.H. Chapman and Mrs. W.E. Whitaker of Atlanta and C.A. Chapman of Pike county. The last wife who survives him, was Miss Mary F. Harrison, sister to the second wife. This marriage took place July the 27, 1879. There are no children by this last marriage, but “aunt Fanny” gave herself sweetly and tenderly as the mother of all the others, and all loved her devotedly. Mr. Chapman was all of his life a member of the Methodist church and at the time of his death was a member of Grace Methodist church of Atlanta where for six years he worshiped during his stay in that city. By his request his remains were buried at Ebenezer church in this county, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. J.O. Grogan, pastor of the M.E. Church, assisted by Rev. C.W. Durden, pastor of the Baptist church. The large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives evidenced of the high esteem in which this good man was held, and fitting were the words of the text as the minister[s] spoke their words of consolation: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty with long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation." - A Friend (Transcribed 6/24/03 Lynn Cunningham) Additional Comments: From Records Collection housed at Old Jail Museum/Archives, Barnesville, Georgia, Shanna English, Director This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.6 Kb Descendants of William Thomas Chapman 1 [1] William Thomas Chapman b: 06 Dec 1830 in Pike Co.
