Stocks Dies Near Dalton The Dalton Argus recently published the notice below of the death of Mr. John W. Stocks, a brother of Messrs. Guilford W. Stocks, A.J. Stocks, George W. Stocks and Mrs. J.F. Stallings, of this section and Mr. T.M. Stocks of Arkansas. He has long lived in Whitfield county. His death was sudden and unexpected. The Argus gives the following account of his death and facts about his life: John W. Stocks, a well known citizen of the Varnella district, was found dead by the roadside near New Hope schoolhouse at two o’clock Sunday evening by Will Huffaker, who happened along that way. Mr. Stocks had been in Dalton visiting his son, Lon Stocks, who lives in North Dalton, and while here talked with a number of his friends and acquaintances, He was in apparently good health and started to walk home Sunday morning, and being 72 years of age, it is supposed that he became overheated from the long walk, causing heart failure resulting in his death. He was found in a path leading in the direction of his son-in-law, Charlie Bevil, where he lived. His body was unmolested and apparently he died without a struggle. Coroner John R. Tarver was notified and went to the scene. He empaneled a jury who rendered a verdict that “the deceased came to his death from heart failure or some other natural cause unknown to the jury.” The deceased is survived by two sons, Lon Stocks of Dalton, James Stocks of Chattanooga, and his daughter, Mrs. Charlie Bevil, where he made his home. He was a respected citizen and had many friends in the county.
