Stocks was born in Pike county, Georgia, Sept. 28th, 1837, about 3 or 4 miles south of Barnesville at the old Stocks homestead. He died in Whitfield county near Dalton, Sept 21, 1909 and was 72 years old. His father, Wright Stocks, and his mother, Sarah Stocks, lived and died at a good old age at the old home and were good people of the "old type," who lived "at home and boarded at the same place." He was married in 1865 to Mrs. V.A. Harris and lived in Pike county till 1895, when he moved to Whitfield county, where he has lived since and raised a family of three children, two sons and one daughter, who survive him. He entered the Confederate service as a volunteer in Company “E”, Third Battalion and was mustered into service by Capt. J.A. White at Lynchburg, Va., October 12th, 1861. This company was organized at The Rock in Upson county by A.J. White and having tendered their services, were assigned to the 3rd Ga. Battalion, then being prepared for service at "Big Shanty" (Kennesaw) Aug. 8, 1861. The Battalion having been ordered to Lynchburg, Va., John W. Stocks joined us at that point. When he entered the services he was 23 years old and served during the war in the 3rd Ga. And afterwards in the 37th Ga. Regiment, and he made a good and faithful soldier. He was quiet, reserved, orderly and obedient to rules and regulations and was always prompt and ready to the call of duty and I, as orderly sergeant of the company, could always depend on him for detail. He has four brothers and one sister still living, namely, Thomas M. Stocks of Stockton, Arkansas, Gilford W. Stocks of Barnesville, Ga., Andrew J. Stocks of Pike county, George W. Stocks of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs. James F. Stallings of Barnesville. I served during the whole war with John W. Stocks and it is a pleasure to testify as to his worthiness. He has passed to the beyond, where the "Old Guard" are all tending. - E.J.
