Oxford, of whose illness your readers were advised last week, expired last Saturday morning at 20 minutes past ten o'clock after five days of intense suffering. The funeral sermon was preached Sunday afternoon by his pastor, Rev. E.M. Hooten, at Hebron Church and his remains were entered in the church burial ground. The services were attended by a large number of weeping friends and relatives. The departure of this worthy man calls for more than a passing statement. For twenty five years he had been an active, upright citizen here distinguished for energy in prosecuting his business, for his high moral character, and for his Christian zeal. In his avocation, which was that of a farmer, he was persevering and successful, prompt in his business transactions, an obliging neighbor, a kind father, and an affectionate husband. He was punctual in attendance upon his church meetings, and faithful in the discharge of his Christian duties. On the morning of his death he gave tender parting admonition and consolation to each member of his family, assuring them of his abiding trust in God. He soon calmly passed away, dying as he lived, a shining example of Christianity, and in his dying hours, an unanswerable argument against infidelity. To the community, to the church, and to his family, his loss is a sad bereavement, but we should submit to the will of Him who doeth all things well. - R (Transcribed 12/7/02 Lynn Cunningham) Note: At Hebron Church Cemetery, Pike County, Georgia: Aaron McFarlin Oxford, b. 29 Jan 1821, d. 25 Nov 1882 Melvina Lynch Oxford, b. 31 Jan 1822, d. 8 Mar 1887 File size: 2.1 Kb
