Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, November 7, 1902 Mr. Mat Patton Dead Mr. Mat Patton who was on his way from his home to Williamson last Tuesday morning where he was engaged with the ginnery at that place was driving a mule thought to be safe. Mr. Foster was in the buggy with him. When near Aycock’s residence the mule took fright at a freight train and ran away. Both lines broke. Mr. Foster jumped out without being seriously hurt. Mr. Patton attempted to jump and fell on his head producing concussion of the brain from which he never recovered consciousness. He was taken into Dr. Aycock’s home where he lingered until Wednesday night when he died. Mr. Patton leaves a wife and two children, a mother and a large number of relatives to lament his death. He was about thirty-five years of age. His funeral was held from the Methodist church at Williamson Thursday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.V. Weathers. His remains were interred in the church cemetery at that place. Mr. Patton was an honest, upright man and held in high esteem by all who knew him.
