Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, July 21, 1899 Holmes - Gray The many friends of Mr. Robt. Holmes and Miss Nellie Gray, of Barnesville were surprised to hear of their marriage which occurred at Forsyth Tuesday evening. Mr. Holmes and Miss Gray left presumably for a drive. The next news from them was a telephone message which said they had gone to the home of Dr. Hollis, a relative, where they had been married. It had been generally supposed that they were to marry soon, but they completely surprised their friends. Both of the parties are quite popular, Miss Gray being one of Barnesville’s loveliest young ladies, while Mr. Holmes stands high, being clerk and treasurer of the city and assistant cashier of the Barnesville Savings Bank. They are receiving congratulations from all their friends. (Transcribed 08/27/03 Lynn Cunningham) Additional Comments: Robert Holmes’ parents were William Penn Holmes and Mary Blair Mitchell. His maternal grandparents were Samuel Mitchell and Jane Lindsey Harris. Nellie’s parents were Samuel Shi Howard Gray and Lula Hollis, from Monroe County.
