Barnesville Gazette: There was a marriage in Pike county last Saturday, that 
had something of interest about it. Certainly there were some novel features 
connected with it that have not accompanied any other connubial union in 
Georgia. The groom, Ben Howell, a colored sojourner at Pike’s Poor Farm near 
Zebulon, is one hundred and ten years of age, in accordance with the best 
information, as to when he first visited this continent. His ebony bride, Jane 
West, has smiled through forty summers, and Saturday made Ben, with the burden 
of so many years, jump up and pop his heels together after the manner of “Old 
Jim Crow,” and assert “happy! happy!” in the presence of Rev. Wade Alexander, 
who tied the blissful knot, and a few friends who had gathered to witness the 
hallowed ceremony. The bride is also a beneficiary of the Poor Farm, and the 
happy old children will pass there honeymoon and declining years in love, ease 
and comfort of their rural home, provided by the charity of this county.

Ben Howell (pauper) is listed as 104 years old, born in 1776 in Georgia, on 
the 1880 Pike County, Georgia census. There is also a female “Willie” [not 
Jane] West, age 20, (pauper and blind) in the same household [Poor Farm].

A marriage record for Ben Howell and Willie [no last name listed] was recorded 
on 29 September 1880 in Pike County.
