The Year of 1860

January 14,1860

Conference opened with singing and prayer. Brother John
Heaton, Moderator. Brother Ansalim Morgan's case was
taken up and he was unanimously expelled. Brother Mat
Heaton's case was taken up and he was unanimously
excluded from the Church. The committee to procure a
housekeeper was continued. The committee to see Brother
Newton reported that he could not serve us. The Church
then unanimously called Brother Northcot, and a committee
appointed to notify him of his call, composed of Brother
Crabb, Rentz and Hitchcock. A committee of Brothers
Rentz, Crabb and Hitchcock appointed to inquire into the
correctness of the report against Brother Evans. Resolved
that this Church charge Brother Atterson with drunkenness
and swearing, and appointed a committee of Brother Pearce
and Bloodworth to see him. Adjourned.

February 18, 1860

Conference opened as usual. Brother Heaton, Moderator.
Committee appointed to procure a housekeeper continued.
The committee appointed to notify Brother Northcot of his
call reported, and committee discharged. Committee
appointed to inquire into the report against Brother
Evans reported that he acknowledged the correctness of
the report, proved to have committed adultery, and he was
unanimously expelled. Committee appointed to see Brother
Atterson reported, and he was also expelled. By a
proposition from Brother B. F. Morgan, the Church
rescinded the act of December 1859 in regard to the
dismissal of himself and wife, and that they are again in
full fellowship with the Church. On motion, agreed to go
into the choice of a Pastor. Brother Thackerson was
unanimously called. A committee appointed of Brethren
Pearce and Hitchcock to notify Brother Thackerson of his

April 14,1860

Conference opened as usual. Brother Thackerson,
Moderator. Brother John (S or L) Early presented a letter
from Friendship Church and was unanimously received.
Letter of Dismission granted to Sister A(unreadable)

housekeeper being absent, the matter postponed until next

May 19,1860

Conference opened with singing. Brother Thackerson,
Moderator. The committee appointed to procure a
housekeeper reported that they had not

done anything in the (unreadable) and, on motion, was
dismissed. Meeting adjourned.

June 9, 1860

Conference opened as usual. Brother Thackerson,
Moderator. The Church was informed on this day that, on
the Sabbath of our last meeting, Brother Thomas Gentry
presented a Dismission from the Salem Church for himself,
wife and daughter, which was read. Also at the same time,
letters of two colored members was received of
Pumpkinvine Church, to wit, Josh and Guley (?), the
property of Miss Lucy Hitchcock. A charge was preferred
against Brother B. F. Morgan of gross immoral conduct.
The charge sustained, and postponed for further action
indefinitely. A committee of three, to wit, Brother
Allen, Heaton, Crabb, Philpot and Pearce. Sister Harriett
Gibson presented a letter from Shiloh Church and was
received. Adjourned. Brother Thackerson, Moderator John

July 14, 1860

After the opening of conference and the usual ceremony,
references were called for, when Brother B. F. Morgan's
case was reported and it was resolved to (unreadable) the
charge, start and stating. (?) A motion was then made to
expel Brother B. F. Morgan, which was unanimously
carried. The committee to see Brother York reported and
discharged. Brother York being present, stated that he
did not consider it sinful to follow the trade in which
he was engaged. The following charge was then preferred,
to wit, that Brother York was engaged in keeping a retail
grocery and a billiard saloon. On motion, then the Church
withdrew his fellowship. Committee appointed to procure
subscription for a new house of worship not ready to

August 18, 1860

In consequence of the absence of our Pastor, Brother
Thomas West sits as Moderator. Elected Brethren Eaves and
J. C. Crabb delegates to the Association, Rentz and
Heaton, alternates. Sent $1.50 for minutes. Our meeting
was protracted, during which the following were added:
Jim Bloodworth, Martha Morgan, Rebecca Pankey, George
Rentz, Elliott Morgan, Ella Pearce, Heaton and -----

September 15,1860

Conference opened by singing. Unanimously called Brother
Thomas West to serve us during the next year. A committee
of Brother J. C. Crabb, J. D. Morgan and J. A. Rentz
appointed to notify Brother West of his call. Letter
granted to Sister Bloodworth and daughter. Adjourned.

November 16,1860

After opening conference as usual, Brother and Sister
Pankey and two daughters, Mary Ann and Elizabeth,
presented Letters of Dismission from the Salem Church and
were unanimously received. Committee to notify Brother
West of his call reported in the affirmative. The Church
unanimously (unreadable) granting Sister Caroline
Bloodworth a Letter of Dismission, and a committee of
Brother Heaton, Pearce and Rentz appointed to sustain
Sister Bloodworth, in order to ascertain the cause of
separation of her husband and herself. A committee
appointed of Brethren Heaton and Pearce to collect
subscription for the payment of Brother Thackerson. On
Sabbath, Mary, property of H. W. Allen, was received by
Experience and Baptism.

The Year of 1861

February, 1861

After the usual ceremonies in opening conference, Brother
L. R. York's case was called, dismissed and continued.
The committee reported upon Sister Bloodworth's case,
which satisfied the Church. A charge preferred against
Brother Bloodworth for leaving his family and absenting
himself from conference, and a committee appointed to
notify him to attend our March conference, of Brother
Heaton and Hitchcock. A committee appointed to see
Brother J. Long of Brethren Rentz and Pearce, in relation
to a report against him in indulging too far in
intoxicating liquors. On motion, adjourned. Brother

March, 1861

Conference opened with singing. Brother West, Moderator.
After opening the door of the Church, references were
called for. Brother Bloodworth's case called. A letter
was had from him, and explained the matter. Not being
ready to report on Brother Long's case, was continued.
Brother L. R. York's case also continued. On motion,

April 20,1861

Conference opened with singing. A door of the Church
opened, when Jesse Hitchcock presented a Letter of
Dismission from Pumpkinvine Church. Brother John T. Boon
from (blank) Church, and Brother and Sister A. Everett
from Hayneville, all of whom were unanimously received.
Brother Long being present, said that he had drunk too
much, but promised he would so no more. He was
unanimously excused. Brother York's case was postponed
until next conference. Letters of Dismission granted to
Ciment and Rachel, servants belonging to G. E.
(unreadable). Letters of Dismission granted to Sister
Bloodworth and daughter. Brother Heaton authorized to
procure hinges and have the door hung. Agreed to purchase
a Bible and hymn book for the use of the Church. Agreed
to change our time of meeting from the third to the

May 1, 1861

After the opening of conference as usual, Brother L. York
confessed he was sorry for having given offence, that he
thought he had done wrong and asked for forgiveness,
which was unanimously granted. Committee to procure a
housekeeper continued. Unanimously agreed to observe the
1st and 2nd day of June as days of fasting and prayer.

July, 1861

After the opening of conference, Sister L. E. Owen
presented a Letter from the first Baptist Church in
Atlanta, and was received. Committee appointed' to
procure a housekeeper reported and dismissed. Brother
Heaton agreed to keep the house. Brother Heaton reported
that he had had a conversation with Brother G. L. Rentz
in relation to a difficulty. Brother Rentz confessed
sorrow. Church forgave him. Agreed to meet in the morning
at 9 o'clock, engage in prayer and thanksgiving to God
for his protecting care of our soldiers at a recent
engagement in Manassas. Agreed to hold a protracted
meeting to commence on Thursday night before the fourth
Sabbath in August. Agreed to postpone our regular
communion until the next meeting. Brother Rentz and Crabb
and Heaton alternate, chosen delegates to our

August 24,1861

Conference opened with singing. Collection for minutes,
$1.50. On motion of Brother J. C. Crabb, the following
committee was appointed to draw up and report on tomorrow
some resolutions in regard to the death of our worthy
brethren, Deacons George Rentz and A. Everett, to wit,
Brethren Crabb, Heaton and Philpot.

September 21,1861

After the opening of conference, Brother William Philpott
presented a Letter of Dismission from Tallapoosa Church,
and was unanimously received. The clerk requested to send
by mail the amount collected for the Association to the

October, 1861

Conference opened as usual. Brother West tendered
resignation to fill a call to serve as chaplain in our
army. (Accepted.) Resolved to meet on next Sabbath for
the purpose of calling a pastor for the ensuing year.

November 3,1861

According to appointment, Church met today for the
purpose above stated. Brother Hambrick unanimously
chosen, and Brethren Pearce and Rentz appointed to notify
Brother Hambrick of his call. A Letter of Dismission
granted to Brother J. T. Boon. The above notification was
made to Brother Hambrick, who accepted the call. The Year of 1862

January 26, 1862

Conference opened as usual. Brother Hambrick, Moderator.
Letters of Dismission granted to Sister DeHay, Brother
Joseph Jenkins and wife, Brother Burton Crabb and wife
and daughter. Brother Crabb requested to see Brother
Andrew Wade and request him to attend at our next
meeting. At the request of our pastor, resolved that our
time of meeting be changed from the fourth to the first

March 1, 1862

Conference opened as usual. Brother Wade's case called,
and referred. Brother Butta was charged with profanity.
Brethren Pearce, Pankey and Scott appointed to cite him
to attend at our next conference. Brother G. L. Rentz was
charged with playing at cards and dancing. Brethren
Pearce and Heaton appointed to write to him (in our Army)
in relation to the same. Brother Dunford agreed to keep

May 3,1862

Conference opened as usual. Brother Hambrick, our pastor,
being absent, his seat was filled by Brother Hambrick,
Senior. On motion, all referring was postponed until next
meeting. Adjourned.

June 31, 1862

Conference opened with singing. References called for.
Brother Wade's case continued. Brother was present,
confessed the charge and asked forgiveness which was

July 1, 1862

Conference opened as usual. The case of Brethren Rentz
and Wade were postponed until something more definite
could be ascertained. The Clerk was appointed to write to
the former, and Brother S. B. Pearce to the latter. A
committee consisting of Brother Rentz, Pearce and Philpot
is to see Mr. Kingsberry in regard to obstructing the
road to our Meeting House. On motion of Brother J. D.
Morgan, this Church agreed to keep and observe next
Thursday as a day of Thanksgiving, and that Brother
Simpson be invited to preach for us. Sister Elizabeth
Coots applied for a Letter of Dismission which was

August 2, 1862

Conference opened as usual. Brother Wade's case was
called for. On motion of Brother Heaton dismissed, until
it can be ascertained that he is amenable to this Church.
Brother G. L. Rentz's case postponed. The case in regard
to the obstructing of our road was called, and with the
addition of Brother Hitchcock, was continued with the
power added to arrange the matter with Mr. Kingsberry.
Brethren Hitchcock and Rentz elected delegates to our

September 6,1862

Conference opened as usual. Brother G. L. Rentz case
referred to next conference. The case in regard to the
obstruction settled. Letter to Association read and
approved. A committee of Brethren Hitchcock and Heaton
appointed to confer with the Bethel Church in relation to
the exclusion of one of her members, at the request of
said member. Brother Dunford by request excused himself
from keeping the house longer. A Letter of Dismission

October 5,1862

Conference opened as usual. Sister Melvina Hedrick
presented a letter from the West Union, and was received.
Brother G. L. Rentz case continued. Letter's of

November 15, 1862

At a called conference, it was resolved in consequence of
some additions of baptism since the letter to the
Association was written, that said letter be so amended
as to include those baptised. Letters of Dismission
granted to Brother B. Pearce, his wife and daughter.
Whereas the delegates elected could not attend the
Association, Brother J. R. Heaton was unanimously chosen.

December 7,1862

Conference opened as usual. The case of G. L. Rentz was

The Year of 1863

February 28, 1863

Conference opened as usual. Brother B. E. Whitehead (a
regularly ordained Deacon), Sister Whitehead, his wife,
and Sister Eugenia, his daughter, presented Letters of
Dismission from the Cedartown Church and were unanimously
received. Sister Louisa E. Owens returned a Letter
granted by the Church and was received. Mr. Bloodworth
applied through Brother Heaton for restoration, and was

April 3, 1863

Conference opened as usual. A colored Brother, Moses,
applied through Brother Heaton for permission to preach
in this house, when, on motion, her consent was withheld.
A Letter of Dismission was granted to Mary, the property

After the opening of conference, Sister Susan Everett
applied for a Letter of Dismission, which was granted.
Resolved that this Church withdraw her fellowship from
Sister Gibson, because of her having joined the Methodist
Church. A committee of three was appointed to confer with
the Masonic Lodge at this place, in regard to the

December 5,1863

Conference opened as usual. Brother Pullen, Moderator.
The committee appointed to confer with the Masons
continued. Resolved unanimously that this Church
contribute quarterly to the support of our missionary to
our soldiers. Unanimously elected Brother Pullen to serve
as our Pastor the ensuing year, and twice during each

March 5, 1864

Conference opened by singing. Brother Heaton, Moderator.
The committee appointed to confer with the Masons
continued. Brother Pullen declined to accept the call,
when Brother James Ryals was unanimously chosen, and
Brother Rentz appointed to notify Brother Ryals of said
call. Granted a Letter of Dismission to Brother J. T.

April 2, 1864

Conference opened as usual. Brother Hambrick in the
chair. The committee appointed to confer with the Masonic
Fraternity failed to report, and the matter was postponed
indefinitely. Brother Ryals accepted the call upon
condition that the Cartersville Church would agree to
change their day of meeting. Said Church was petitioned
to do so, and the changes effective, when Brother Ryals

April 11, 1864

Conference opened as usual. Brother Ryals in the
moderator chair. No business. Adjourned.

May 7, 1864

After the opening of conference, Brother James Hitchcock
presented Letters of Dismission for himself, wife and two
daughters from the Bethlehem Church, all of whom was
received. Collected thirty-two dollars for Brother Muse,

Conference opened by singing. Brother William Coalson,
Moderator. Brother James L. Elliott and wife presented
Letters of Dismission from the Bethlehem Church, and were
received. A vote of thanksgiving was tendered our
Methodist brethren for the use of the House of Worship,

Pearce returned a Letter of Dismission granted to
himself, his wife and daughter, and was unanimously
received. On motion of Brother Pankey, a committee was
appointed to make (unreadable) of our old House of
Worship. Letters of Dismission granted to Brother J. D.
Morgan, his wife and two daughters. William Coalson,

August, 1865

Conference opened as usual. A Letter of Dismission was
granted to Sister Martha Terhune. Appointed Brethren John
Heaton and B. E. Whitehead delegates to the General
Meeting, and elected Brethren James Hitchcock and J.
Heaton delegates to the Association, and Brethren Pankey

September 9,1865

After the opening of conference as usual, a Letter of
Dismission was granted to Moses, the property formerly of
T. Jones, and with the liberty to exercise in public.
Resolved that this Church extend an arm for the reception
of members at the schoolhouse in the neighborhood of Mr.
Kilgo's. Resolved also that we get our old house back if
we can, and repair it. Appointed Brother Heaton a
committee to attend to it. Granted a Letter of Dismission
to Sister Mary Jane Hunt. William Coalson, Moderator

November 10,1865

Conference opened as usual. Brother Heaton reported that
he had succeeded in getting back the House. A Letter of
Dismission granted to Sister Elizabeth Smith. The
resolution recommended by our Association at its last
session in regard to our uniting with our Primitive
brethren was unanimously adopted. Brother Heaton
appointed a committee to purchase lumber for repairing

December 23,1865

Georgia, Polk County. The Baptist Church at Van Wert met
in conference. Brother J. R. Heaton, Moderator. First
chose Brother J. M. Muse unanimously for our Pastor for
the ensuing year. 2nd, appointed Brother J. C. Hitchcock
to visit Brother Muse and know if he would attend us.
3rd, appointed Brethren J. R. Heaton, J. C. Hitchcock and
S. B. Pearce as a committee to confer with the patrons of
the school and to make an arrangement for a transfer of
land, for the purpose of building a Meeting House there.

January 13,1866

The Baptist Church at Van Wert met in conference. Elder
E. A. Camp, Moderator. Ist, opened the door of the Church
for the reception of members. Received Brother John
Stocks and Sister Caroline M. Stocks by Letter. 2nd,
Brother J. C. Hitchcock visited Elder J. M Muse, and he
states that he cannot attend us. 3rd, the committee was
discharged. 4th charged Brother John A. Rentz with
fornication, and also gross immoral conduct and adultery.
4th, charged Sister Susan Simms with adultery. 5th,
appointed Brethren James H. Hitchcock and Lindsey Elliott
as a committee to see Brother John A. Rentz and Sister
Simms, and cite them to attend at the next conference.
6th, went into the choice of a pastor for the present
year. 7th, chose Elder E. A. Camp, unanimously. Jesse

appointed Brethren S. B. Pearce, B. E. Whitehead and J.
R. Heaton as a committee to examine the Church Book and

of Dismission and was received. There being no other

August 3,1966

Opened the door of the Church at Brother J. C.
Hitchcock's, when Mary Heaton came forward and related
her Christian Experience, and was unanimously received by
the members present.

August 25, 1866

The Church at Van Wert met in conference. Elder E. A.
Camp, Moderator. Ist, opened the door of the Church for
the reception of members, when Georgia Ann Yates came
forward and related her Christian Experience, and was
unanimously received. 2nd, appointed a committee of the
whole Church to examine the Old Baptist Meeting House and
make some arrangement to rebuild or sell it. 3rd, granted
Letters of Dismission to Sister Josephine Rentz and

September 22,1866

The Church at Van Wert met in conference. Elder E. A.
Camp, Moderator. Ist, opened the door of the Church for
the reception of members, when Brother Jesse Chambers and
wife Tabitha S. J. and Sister Sarah Harrison presented
their Letters of Dismission. 2nd, the committee was
continued. 3rd, granted a Letter of Dismission to Brother
William Philpot. 4th, resolved that the Church meet on
the second Saturday in October for the purpose of
choosing a minister for the ensuing year to serve us.

a charge preferred against Perlina, a colored sister, for
living in adultery. 3rd, appointed Brethren Ellis and
James Whitehead as committee to see the colored sister
and inform her of the charge preferred, and notify her to
attend at our next conference, course February. 4th,
restored and granted Brother George S. Rentz a Letter of
Dismission. 5th, the case in regard to John A. Rentz case
was taken up and postponed till next conference, and the

reception of members, and Sister Mary Jane Hunt presented

regard to a colored sister Perlina, case. The committee's
report was heard and said committee dismissed, and the
Church excommunicated her from their fellowship. 4th,
granted Sister Harriet Rogers and Brother Jesse Hitchcock
Letters of Dismission. 5th, the committee appointed to
notify Brother Camp and Eubanks of the calls of the

The Church met in conference. Elder E. A. Camp,
Moderator. Opened the door for the reception of members,
when Brother J. M. Heaton, an expelled member from this
Church, presented himself for restoration, and after
hearing his acknowledgment, he was unanimously restored
to full fellowship. Again called for miscellaneous
business, and there was a series of resolutions presented
to the Church for adoption from the Bethlehem Church, in
regard to how some of the delegates of the Association
was treated at the last meeting of that Body by the
Moderator, in abridging the right of delegates to speak,
which was adopted. Resolved, that we adopt the following
resolution: Resolved, inasmuch as it has been the Will of
God to remove from us our Beloved Sister Martha E.
Dunford by Death, which calls upon us to humble ourselves
before the Lord, and further sympathise and condole with
the bereaved family and relatives and order that a page
be left blank in our Church Book in remembrance of our
beloved sister, and further order that this resolution be
spread on our Minutes and the Clerk send a copy of this
resolution to the family and relatives of our deceased
sister. No other business, adjourned. P. S. Resolved that

resolved that we meet on Wednesday for the purpose of

Tabitha Anderson applied for a Letter of Dismission which
was granted. On motion, the following resolution was
adopted: Resolved, inasmuch as it has again been the Will
of the Lord to remove from us by Death, our Beloved
Sister Manerva Dodds, which calls upon us to humble
ourselves before the Lord, and we further sympathize and

door for the reception of members, when Susan Simms
presented herself for restoration, who was an expelled
member from this Church, and after hearing her
acknowledgment, she was unanimously restored to full
fellowship with us. Called for references. The committee
appointed to wait on Elder J. M. Key to inform him of the
call we had made about a preacher to serve us for the
year 1870 reported, and Brother Key being present,
accepted the call. On motion, appointed a committee
consisting of Brethren J. C. Hitchcock, J. R. Heaton and
J. C. Pankey to circulate a subscription to raise funds
to pay our Pastor and to pay him one half at the
expiration of six months and the remainder at the end of

appointed to inquire into the indebtedness of the Church,
and assess each member according to what they have
according to ad valorum, to pay the indebtedness of the
Church. The committee to consist of Brethren A. J.
Hickman and T. G. Madden. Resolved that we admit the
Teacher at Van Wert to hold his examination and
exhibition in our House of Worship, and Brother Heaton to
attend on the day to see that the House is not abused. On
motion, resolved a committee be appointed to wait on
Brother Dunford and inform him of some unfavorable
reports on him, and of his long absence from Church, and
request him to attend the next conference and give the
Church satisfaction. The committee to consist of Brethren

members and received none. Called for references and the
committee on assessing each member according to what they
have to pay the indebtedness of the Church reported not
ready. Committee to wait on Brother Dunford to inform him
of unfavorable reports on him and request him to attend
next conference and give his reason for his long absence
reported not ready. Called for volunteer to represent us
in the Association and resulted in the choice of Brethren
Haynes and Hitchcock, and Hickman alternate. Brother Wood
from Cedartown Church laid before the Body the propriety

consideration. On motion, resolved that we let out our
house no more, unless the Church agree to do so. On
motion, resolved that we pay Mr. Dupree $5.45, the money
that was raised by the Charade, and otherwise resolved
further that Brother T. Haynes have the money that
Brother J. R. Heaton has collected, 21 dollars. No other
business. Adjourned.
