FLAG PRESENTATION

On Monday, May 5, 1861, A beautiful flag was presented to
the Polk County Rangers in front of the City Hall By Miss
Lyons, who accompanied it with the following remarks:-

"I have wrought with my own hands this battle flag, which
I take pleasure in presenting to you, and through you, to
your gallant company.

While in your keeping, I feel assured that its motto,
'Liberty or Death', will ever be your watch-word,
inspiring each and all of you to noble and heroic deeds
of daring, which will render your names immortal.

Accept this flag and with it, the prayers and best wishes
of the donor, for your health, happiness and triumphant
success on every battle-field and when the bloody
struggle is over, may you return, unharmed, to your home,
to enjoy the fruits of liberty and independence. And
now...

'Soldiers, mount thy gallant steeds; Seek, seek the ranks
of war; 'Tis better, there, in death to bleed Than drag a
tyrant's car.'

'Strike, strike, nor think the blow unseen That frees the
the limbs where chains have been; One glance, one kiss,
then soldiers on And view another Marathon.'

''ON, on, we conquer or we die', Must be the South's
resounding cry; And glorious will be your glad reply The
shout of death or liberty.'

The flag was accepted on behalf of the Company by Mr. F.
C. Shropshire in a neat and eloquent speech.

Elected Captain, June 14, 1862. Resigned April 10, 1864.

Peek, David L.- 2nd Lieutenant, June 1, 1861. Died at
Gordonsville, Virginia, August 20, 1861.

Thompson, Richard R.- Jr 2nd Lieutenant, June 1, 1861.
Elected 2nd Lieutenant, August 20, 1861. Resigned because
of a disability, April 2, 1862.

Spence, William C.- 1st Sergeant, June 1, 1861. Elected
Jr 2nd Lieutenant, October 24, 1861; 2nd Lieutenant,
April 2, 1862; 1st Lieutenant, June 14, 1862; Captain,
April 10, 1864. Wounded at Darbytown Road, Virginia,
October 7, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia,
April 9, 1865.

Carter, John L.- 2nd Sergeant, June 1, 1861. Appointed
1st Sergeant, October 24, 1861. Elected 2nd Lieutenant,
April 2, 1862; 1st Lieutenant, April 10, 1864.
Surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

Hughs, James M.- 3rd Sergeant, June 1, 1861. Appointed
2nd Sergeant, October 24, 1861. Furnished a substitute
and discharged, February 28, 1862. Appointed 1st
Sergeant, Company F, 3rd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer
Cavalry, May 10, 1862. Captured at New Haven, Kentucky,
September 29, 1862. Received near Vicksburg, Mississippi,
for exchange, November 1, 1862. Elected 1st Lieutenant,
Company A, 12th Battalion, Georgia Militia Cavalry, July
20, 1864. Surrendered at Kingston, Georgia, May 12, 1865.

Whaley, James L.- 4th Sergeant, June 1, 1861. Appointed
3rd Sergeant, October 24, 1861. Wounded at Chickamauga,
Georgia, September 20, 1863. Absent and wounded, October
31, 1864. No later record.

Hopper, Madison R. (Pony)- 1st Corporal, June 1, 1861.
Appointed 4th Sergeant, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox,
Virginia, April 9, 1865.

Garris, John- 2nd Corporal, June 1, 1861. Appointed
Regimental Musician. Absent becauce of illness, May 6,
1863- October 31, 1864. No later record.

Vernon, William T.- 3rd Corporal, June 1, 1861.
Surrenderd as a private at Appomattox, Virginia, April 9,
1865.

Brown, John L.- 4th Corporal, June 1, 1861. Discharged
because of a disability, Fairfax, Virginia, October 2,
1861.

Adams, Alfred- Private, February 25, 1862. Died at
Richmond, Virginia, July 25, 1862.

Agan, Peter M.- Private, June 14, 1861. Appointed
Regimental Musician. Absent without leave, June 22, 1864-
October 31, 1864. Pension records show that he was
detailed to make ammunition in Bartow County, Georgia.
Surrendered at Kingston, Georgia, May 12, 1865.

Barry, N. Stokes- (Webmaster's note: I believe that this
name should read, Barry N. Stokes, but I will leave it as
is until confirmed) Private, June 1, 1861. Appointed 1st
Sergeant, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia,
April 9, 1865. (Born in Harris County, Georgia, September
11, 1841)

Baugh, Woodson V.- Private, June 1, 1861. Appointed 2nd
Sergeant, 1864. Killed at Fort Harrison, Virginia,
September 29, 1864.
