Stephens wend@bellsouth.net July 11, 2004, 6:33 pm The Daily Constitution, Atlanta, GA SHOOTING AFFRAYS IN HARALSON Cedartown Advertiser Information reached us that on Saturday evening last, at Draketown, in Haralson county, Dr. M.K. Phillips shot dangerously “Bud” Hicks, a well-known character who lives just over the line in Carroll county. We have not been enabled to obtain full particulars of the shooting, but learn it occurred from Hicks having abused Dr. Phillip’s wife, and Phillips coming up and Hicks turning his abuse upon him, he shot at him four times, one of the shots taking effect in the head. Dr. Phillips bears the reputation of being a peaceable citizen, and it is said was so justifiable in doing the shooting that the public authorities did not deem it proper to arrest him. At last accounts Hicks was alive, but his chances of recovery were few. We learn also that on the west side of Haralson county, near the Alabama line, on Monday night last, a lewd woman named Powell shot and killed Albert Green, a young man of the county, Green, who claimed to have borne insult from Miss Powell while in company with a respectable young lady, went to the house of Miss Powell for the purpose as stated of chastising her. She seems to have heard of his threats and was prepared for him, and when he went shot him, from the effects of which he did not long linger. It is stated that they had a considerable fracas and the woman was shot and badly beaten up.
