Harkins, 78, Scottsville, died Wednesday, July 23 at 9 a.m. in the Gordon Hospital. He was born in Floyd County October 12, 1924, the son of the late Denzil R. and Sally Gray Harkins. Harkins was a well-known cattle rancher and was a member of the Plainsville Independent Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II in the South Pacific, where he earned the WWII Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with two bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with bronze stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Donald Eric Harkins and Carrie Gail Harkins as well as a sister, Mary R. Barnes and five brothers, Burnell, Barry, Marion and John Harkins, and D.R. Harkins, Jr. He is survived by: wife, Elaine Harkins; son, Terry Harkins, Cedartown; daughters Carole H. Bridges, Scottsville and Linda Garing, Pell City, AL; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, July 25, at the Plainsville Independent Methodist Church with Rev. Bobby Stephens officiating. Burial followed at the Fain Cemetery with Juanita Grisset in charge of the music. The pallbearers were: Casey Bridges, Jason Fuller, J.C. Garland and Glenn, Sean and Johnny Harkins. Honorary pallbearers were: Paul Garing, Jerry Garland, Tommy Gates and Bruce Schuler. The Thomas Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements while the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home made the announcement available locally.
