Mrs. Zonie Matthews, 82, 370 Wingfoot Street, Rock-mart, died Thursday, March 
2, in a Rome Nursing Center following several months of declining health. She 
was born in Chero-kee County, Alabama, a daughter of the late Cobb Dawson and 
Lottie Goss Dawson. Mrs. Matthews had been a resident of Rock-mart since 1969 
moving from the Shannon commu-nity. She was a member of the New Prospect 
Baptist Church and a homemaker. Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her hus-
band, James W. Matthews Sept. 28, 1984 and by sons, Mitchell and Frank Mat-
thews. Survivors include four sons, Shelton Matthews and his wife, Mary Ann, 
Rome; LeRoy Matthews and Mary Nell Barrow, Rome; Donnie Matthews and wife 
Alliene, Aragon; Dennis Matthews and wife Shannon, Rock-mart; daughter-in-law, 
Mrs. Dot Matthews, Montezuma, GA; two sisters, Mrs. Mere-lene Lockridge and 
Mrs. Virginia Kirby, both of Anniston, AL; one brother, Willard Dawson, 
Anniston, AL, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral 
service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4 in the Chapel of Alvis Miller & 
Son Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Davis and Rev. Charles Cornwell officiating. 
Interment was in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Forney, AL. Pallbearers 
included Chuck Matthews, Jody Matthews, David Gowens, Ryan Matthews, Harvey 
Burnes and Tim Gray. The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home was in charge of 
arrangements
