Stephens wend@bellsouth.net July 8, 2004, 4:50 pm Cedartown Standard, Cedartown, GA., November 20, 1902 Charley Smith, A negro named Charley Smith was fatally injured Thursday morning at the Cedartown Oil Mills. In putting on a belt his clothing caught on a set screw, and he was drown on the revolving shaft and terribly mangled. In spite of his injuries he lived until 1 o’clock. No one but the victim himself seems to have been to blame for the accident. Another negro told him when he started to put on the belt that he would help him if he would wait a minute, but Smith persisted in doing it alone, paying the penalty of his carelessness with his life.
