Stephens wend@bellsouth.net July 11, 2004, 5:31 pm The Atlanta Constitution, Atlanta, Ga., December 23, 1882 Polk County Superior Court--Founder of the Cherokee Furnace Dead Special to the Constitution Cedartown, December 20--The adjourned term of the superior court of this county is being held here this week, Judge Branham presiding. Mr. John Thompson, who has been sick for more than twelve months, founder of the Cherokee furnace, died here this morning of liver disease. Mr. Thompson was nearly seventy years of age, and was originally from Ohio. He devoted his lifetime to the pig iron business, and had earned the reputation of being one of the best furnace manager in the south.
