DIED-After a short illness, on the 15th of June last, at Cumberland Gap Tenn., WM. S. PHILLIPS, son of Mrs. Matilda Phillips, of Polk County, Georgia. He was a member of Capt. Stiff's company, 6th Georgia Cavalry. He was a brave and good young man, and by his noble courage and courteous bearing had won the love of all his comrades. He was ever ready to obey the commands of his officers, and with a cheerfulness that is worthy of imitation, he discharged every duty that was imposed upon him. For twelve long months he has braved many dangers and faithfully served his beloved country, but alas! He has fallen in her defense. We, his companions in arms, mourn his loss, and deeply sympathize with his widowed mother and fatherless sisters, in this their sad bereavement. "But we mourn not as those who have no hope," for we firmly believe he has lain down his implements of warfare, for the power and joys of heaven. William was his mother's only son. A dutiful and affectionate boy, her hope and stay in her declining years, and heavy indeed will be the stroke to her, and cheerless her home where his pleasant voice can never be heard again. May God in His Mercy bind up her broken heart, and give her strength to press forward to the Better Land, where there is no more sickness or death, and where her loved boy will stay in her presence forever. "There is a world above, Where parting is unknown, A long eternity of love, Formed for the good alone, And faith beholds the dying here Translated to that glorious sphere." E. R. D.
