In 1902 came the Oconee and Western, now the Wrightsville and Tennille, a short line from Hawkinsville to Tennille connecting with the Central of Georgia and Augusta Southern at Tennille. During the nineties the Hawkinsville and Florida Southern, connecting with the Georgia Southern, now the Southern, at Worth, was completed, opening up a fine farming and timber section in Wilcox and Worth Counties. Later the Hawkinsville and Western, linking this section by rail with Houston and Bibb Counties, was opened for traffic. This road gave us another direct route to Macon via Perry and Fort Valley. Only the Southern and the Wrightsville and Tennille remain, the Hawkinsville and Florida Southern and Hawkinsville and Western have long since been "junked." Served always by branch and short line railways, and with the junking of two of the short lines, and the constant threat that others would follow, the city can now dispel all fears, for our paved and improved highways have solved our every. transportation need. Trucks for freight, and now a super de luxe bus service with two double daily through services from Cincinnati to Jacksonville, and a convenient local schedule between Eastman and Macon.
