There was scarcely a family in the county which had not its representative upon the field. These women gave the best of their time, their money, and their household goods to furnish all things needed. Linen sheets, pillow cases, hand-kerchiefs and clothing were gladly contributed for use as bandages and lint for the wounded ones. Carpets were ripped from floors to furnish warm covering upon the cold Virginia mountain sides. Little girls knitted and sewed. Spinning, weaving, and dyeing cloth was done in the homes. None but those who lived at that time can estimate the sacrifices so cheerfully made. It was an Aid Society in every sense of the word. This band of women met weekly. They cut out all kinds of clothing for the soldiers which was distributed for others to make. They knitted socks and made knap-sacks, gloves, and a kind of helmet for the head. In every suit was put a little mending bag, and often a note of cheer was dropped in. They packed boxes to send the soldiers. Everybody contributed to these bread, biscuits, ham, chicken, ginger-bread, etc. The joy these boxes carried to the soldiers cannot be told. Not only were the soldiers helped, but many a soldier's wife and children at home received assistance and sympathy. These devoted women left nothing undone that could aid or relieve. History may relate how men fought and sacrificed life in defense of the land they loved, but no history yet written has begun to tell what battles were fought by the women at home. These women of our county are a part of our immortal history.
