It not only furnished the rural folk a road to some of the leading markets but it was the only highway of travel into some sections of the southern part of the State. Its importance gave it more than a local fame, being well known to many throughout Georgia who had no occasion to travel over it. However, during the past three or four decades, this historic old trail has suffered a loss of prestige caused by the necessity of opening many new roads to meet the requirements of an ever increasing population. Again, the system of county roads and also the State and national highway systems that cover our State like a cobweb are steadily diminishing its fame and obliterating physical traces of the old trail. And the further custom of giving names or numbers to the modern highways which apply along their entire course, notwithstanding that they pass over the former historic highways for many miles, is calculated to cause the Blackshear roads to pass out of our memory. Already we are getting confused as to the exact location of some of these historic routes. It is well that every effort be made to identify them and keep their location certain.
