Whitfield, who was at the time Judge of the County Court, and it was 'during his administration that the original steel span was placed over the Ocmulgee River to eliminate the ferry. On recommendation of the grand jury at the May term in 1879, he was directed to proceed with this construction with a committee consisting of J. H. Pate, John Henry, R. T. Bembry, and J. J. Kinchen. The November term of the same year commended his labor by saying: "We endorse Judge Whitfield's actions in the way he is carrying on the work on the river bridge, and that he continue to use his discretion as to how the work shall be completed." On recommendation of the grand jury, May term, 1887, in compliance with an act of the Legislature approved December 20, 1886, Judge C. C. Kibbee of the Oconee Circuit, appointed the following to act as a board of county commissioners: J. P. Brown, J. L. Anderson, G. W. Jordan, Jr., A. J. Thompson, and J. O. Baskins. p. 54 This board was succeeded in 1892 by G. W. Jordan, Jr., R. W. Anderson, R. E. Reynolds, E. J. Henry, and A. J. Thompson. This board was abolished, and on December 7, 1893, the county's affairs were placed in the hands of Judge P. T. McGriff, the Ordinary of the county. A board was reestablished in July of 1897, consisting of R. W. Anderson, J. S. Orem, J. J. Taylor, J. B. Hinson, and L. F. Finleyson. T. S. Reeves succeeded J. J. Taylor on January 1, 1901, and W. J. Mullis was named in March to succeed Reeves. The board as of March 1st consisted of R. W. Anderson, J. S. Orem, L. F. Finleyson, S. M. Livingston, and W. J. Mullis. On the death of J. S. Orem, H. H. Sparrow was selected to fill his place, going on the board November 5, 1901. F. M. Dykes succeeded Livingston on January 3, 1903, making the board at that time constituted of R. W. Anderson, H. H. Sparrow, F. M. Dykes, L. F. Finleyson, and W. J. Mullis. Filling the vacancy caused by the death of Capt. R. W. Anderson, E. J. Henry was selected, taking a place on June 2, 1903. Messrs. Sparrow and Henry resigned July 7, 1908, and W. E. Chancey and C. B. Bohannon were selected to succeed them. January 5, 1908, the board started off with F. M. Dykes, L. F. Finleyson, W. E. Chancey, C. B. Bohannon, and T. A. Reeves. At the April 5, 1910, meeting of the board, W. E. Chancey resigned, and A. T. Fountain was selected by the board as his successor, going on the board at its May, 1910, meeting. On January 3, 1911, Ramon Lee joins the board, succeeding L. F. Finleyson, and on May 18, 1911, A. T. Fountain resigning, Morgan Thompson was elected by the board to fill the vacancy, and also to become chairman of the board. At a meeting of the board held November 10, 1911, the members resigned, in view of the passage of an act to establish one-man commission. Judge P. T. McGriff, Ordinary, conducted the affairs of the county until the election of A. J. Thompson as sole commissioner, who began service as such on May 7, 1912, with H. C. Brown acting as clerk to the board. On the death of Mr. Thompson, R. O. Pate succeeded him in April, 1913. Mr. Pate was succeeded by a board of three commissioners in February, 1915, consisting of R. 0. Pate, D. L. Ridley, and B. J. Harrell. This board was abolished and the county in 1919 reverted to the sole commissioner of roads and revenues, Mr. Morgan Thompson being elected to that position, which he held until March, 1924. with Ordinary H. A. Haskins serving the thirty days pending the election of J. J. Whitfield as successor to Mr. Thompson. Mr. Whitfield began his service May 1, 1924, as sole commissioner, p. 55 recalling the fact that his father, the late Judge H. H. Whitfield, in his capacity of Judge of the County Court serving in the eighties, held the same responsibility. Mr. J. J. Whitfield is in his eleventh year of service at this writing.
