Its length was 32 miles, breadth 17, and area 540 square miles. The population of Pulaski in 1845 was 3,512 whites and 2,399 blacks, totaling 5,911. The amount of tax returns for 1845 was $2,224.81. Farm lands were valued at three dollars an acre. The climate was hot and unhealthy. People did not as a rule live to an advanced age. One case of longevity was Jacob Parkerson, a soldier of the Revolution, who died at the age of seventy-nine. Pulaski offered a wide field to the geologist. The limestone formation prevailed, filled with shells of almost every variety. Fossil bones and petrified wood were very common. On the banks of the river petrifications were abundant. There are a number of mounds in various parts of the county. Hawkinsville was the post office, incorporated in 1820. Hartford, opposite Hawkinsville, was a thriving place, but was gradually being abandoned on account of being unhealthy. Hawkinsville had six stores, two churches, two hotels, and the population was 175. About $150,000 worth of goods were sold per annum. Amount of cotton received per annum, 6,000 bales. Value of town lots was $49,866.00; value of stock in trade, $43,250.00; money at interest, $7,445.00. Hospitality and kindness to strangers were characteristic traits of the people. p. 60 Among the early settlers of Hawkinsville were: James Phillips. M. McCormick, S. Mitchell, S. Coalson, and J.
