At the beginning of the twentieth century this little town was started. It was named by Dr. S. R. Mitchell, as it was started on his lands, in honor of his wife, who was Miss Sallie Finleyson. Dr. Mitchell was one of the early settlers of this section of the country, and was always ready to push when there was a movement for progress. The first enterprise in this town was a sawmill, owned by Dr. J. M. Horne, S. R. Mitchell, and C. M. Reynolds; also several general merchandise stores. One owned by W. E. Finleyson, who has been very successful, is still carrying on that line of work here. Mr. H. C. Fuqua, now living in Hawkinsville, farmer and warehouseman, was at that time very active in building up the town. As time passed on, most of the wooden store buildings were destroyed by fire and were replaced by brick buildings owned by Dr. J. M. Horne and J. H. King. It would take too much space to name each person who has had successful business interests in the days when the Hawkinsville and Florida Southern Railroad was here. But losing the railroad has proved quite a disadvantage, not only to the town, but to the people all through this section of the county. Although at present there are several stores, a large ginnery, two churches, post office, and bank. The Bank of Finleyson stands in honor to L. F. Finleyson, de-ceased. Through his remarkable business management during his life this bank has been able to withstand all the panics of recent years without being shaken in the least. His son, Clarence, is his successor, and is now cashier of this bank, and there is no small bank anywhere more substantial or enjoying the esteem and confidence of its constituency more than this bank. By a special act of the Legislature a few years ago, the school was consolidated with Pineview School, that the children might have the privilege of attending an accredited school. The town is surrounded by fine farm lands, its people are among Pulaski's best citizens, noted for their integrity and hospitality. Finleyson is now thirty-five years old, is still growing, and, while a small town, it is progressive and built on a firm financial basis.
