Soon after organization, about the first of March 1862, this company was ordered to Savannah, Georgia and the 49th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, was organized at Camp Davis, located near Guyton on the Central of Georgia railroad. Soon after organization the regiment was ordered to Goldsboro, North Carolina, where we were, for a few days, drilled in the arts of war. During the latter half of the month of May 1862, we were ordered to Richmond, Virginia, arriving in that city about May 28th. There days later, May 31, we fought our first battle, that of Seven Pines. We guarded important positions on the Chickahominy river until June 26, when we were engaged in the first of the series of battles known as the Seven Days Fight in front of Richmond. At Mechanicsville the first at- tack was made on the Federal's right. On the 27th of June we had the unusual distinction of being hotly engaged in the battles of Frazier's Farm, and First Cold Harbor. We followed close on the retreating Federals until the closing battle of the Seven Days Fight, that of Malvern Hill. Up to this time our regiment was a part of Pender's Brigade. During the few weeks of rest, until our next movement, we became a part of what was afterwards known as Thomas' Brigade, commanded by General E. L. Thomas, and composed of the 14th, 35th, 45th and 49th Georgia Regiments. Being then a part of Stonewall Jackson's Division (of foot Cavalry,) about the 8th of August 1862, movements were commenced to thwart the boasted plans of General John Pope, who had succeeded General McClellan in command of the Federal forces in Northern Virginia, and on August 9th we met the enemy at Cedar Run, where our regiment was in the thickest of the battle. We lost some of our best men, and our hearts were especially saddened by the mortally wounding of our former beloved Captain, now Lieutenant Colonel, Seaborn M. Manning, who died a few days later. After a signal victory at Cedar Run, General Jackson succeeded in surprising Pope by attack his army from the rear, and on August 29th and 30th we were actively engaged in the 2nd battle of Manassas, which, like the first battle of that name, resulted in a decisive victory for the Southern army. September 1st closed with a minor engagement at Chantilly. Just after dark on that night, the Federal General, Phil Kearney, (a one armed Mexican War veteran, at this time commanding a division in Pope's army,) rode up to our line, and inquired as to what troops we were. On being answered "49th Georgia," he quietly wheeled his horse, at which movement Major John H. Pate detected the Federal uniform, and ordered him to halt. When he failed to obey this command the Major next ordered the "boys" to shoot him. He was killed instantly. There has been much controversy as to whose troops killed General Kearney, whose death seemed to survivors of our regiment as wholly unnecessary. We next participated in the capture of General Nelson A. Miles, with eleven thousand Federals at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, about September 14th during the first Maryland campaign, and our brigade being left to guard these prisoners two or three days, we were relieved just in time to reach Sharpsburg, Maryland, as that battle closed. Then back to Virginia and a short rest until December. On the 13th of that month we were engaged in the first battle of Fredericksburg. Then in winter quarters at Camp Gregg, near Fredericksburg, Virginia, until the opening of campaigns in 1863. Our company was actively engaged in the battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863, and the second battle of Fredericksburg, a day or so later. Then followed the Pennsylvania campaign. We were in the thickest of the battles of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Hagerstown, Maryland, No event of special interest until the winter of 1863. In December our brigade, together with General T. L. Rosser's brigade of cavalry, was sent on a raiding expedition into the Shenandoah and Morefield valleys. Surprised the Federals in the latter valley and captured a train of one hundred and thirty-six wagons loaded with provisions, intended for our friends, the enemy, thus securing sufficient food to supply General Lee's army for four months. This was one of our proudest feats. Returning to the Rappahammock we remained at Orange Court House until May 1864. Our experience at the Wilderness on May 5th and 6th is still impressed on our minds. Continued in several minor engagements from Spotsylvania to 2nd Cold Harbor. Then continuously on lines in front of Richmond and Petersburg until March 25th, 1865, where our already depleted ranks were made thinner by the capture of several of our company at Fort Steadman, Virginia, in front of Petersburg, thereby leaving only a corporal's guard to surrender at Appomattox, Virginia, on April 9th, 1865.
