Mr. Garrett was born in Twiggs County, but has liven in Pulaski for 50 years. His life was an interesting one. He was a member ofthe Missionary Baptist church for 65 years, and is said never to have missed a conference of his church during all of that time. His pastor, at Salem, Rev. Eli Evans, says that for the twelve years that he has served Salem, Mr. Garrett's seat was never vacant either at a conference or preaching. Not with standing his great age, he has worked actively in his farm, doing a full man's work, until the present year. He served from the commencement to the close of the Confederate war, was scarcely sick a day in his life, and had a remarkable constitution. Mr. Garrett was twice married. His first wife was Miss Matilda Lewis, of Twiggs County, who bore him 17 children, 9 of whom still survive, namely: Jack Garrett, Mrs. William Allen, Mrs. Martin Smith, Mrs. Dave Towson, all of Laurens County, William H. Garrett, of Tifton, Mrs. W. H. Davis, of Rebie, Mrs. Smith, of near Yonkers, and Medie Garrett, of Eastman. Mr. Garrett's second wife was Miss Bettie Gilbert, of Laurens County, who still survives him, together with her two children, Mrs. Hinson, of Salem and Bubber Garrett. Mr. Garrett is also survived by three brothers, T. J. of near Chester, Jake, of Cochran, and Ed of Pensacola, Fla., and two sisters, Mrs. Sim G. NeSmith and Mrs. John Willis, of near Cochran. He also has a half brother of Mr. R. E. Nichols, of Cochran. The funeral at Buckhom Friday was attended by a large concourse of friends and the death is deeply mourned by the whole community by whom he was held in high esteem.
