NORMAN MCDUFFIE KILLED. It is seldom we are called upon to chronicle a sadder or more unfortunate occurrence that the killing of Capt. Norman McDuffie by the cars at Dillard’s Station, Macon and Brunswick Railroad, on Thursday last, while he was on his way to Texas. When the news was received by telegraph an hour after the accident, our citizens were grief stricken at the sad fate that had befallen one whom they had known and esteemed so long. But few men could claim more friends in this community and vicinity than Capt. McDuffie. For long years (indeed, we might say his entire life) he had been identified with the interest of our section, and during that time, endeared himself to a host of the best citizens of this and adjoining counties. Two years ago he he removed to Texas, accompanied by his family and a few friends who yet remain in that far-off-state, and to whom the mournful tidings of his untimely death will be an almost unbearable weight of sorrow. The remains of the deceased were brought down on Thursday night’s train and buried at the cemetery in this place on Saturday last, the Masonic brethren of Mount Hope Lodge paying the usual honors to a departed member of their fraternity. The business houses of the town were closed on the occasion, and a large number of citizens joined in the procession. There were many sad hearts that day. A man we may say everbody liked had gone to his final resting place. May mother earth gently o’er him, and his soul find rest in that better world unknown to mortals. NORMAN MCDUFFIE died January 18. 1872. Born Montgomery county January 15, 1809, and was 63 years and 3 days at death. Same date: SAD ACCIDENT AT BULLARD STATION. CAPTAIN NORMAN MCDUFFIE KILLED. Thursday morning as the up passenger train on the Macon and Brunswick road was passing Bullard Station, Capt. Norman McDuffie stepped from the car while the train was yet in motion and when walking up the platform steps to enter the depot, slipped and fail between the moving train and the platform and was instantly crushed to death. These are the particulars as nearly we could get them, and suppose they are in the main, correct. Captain McDuffie was about fifty years of age and has been for many years an influential citizen of Pulaski County, until two years ago, when he removed to Texas. A short since he returned to visit his old friends and acquaintances, and had just strated back to his home and family. Alas’ Alas’ he will never reach them. Several persons from Hawkinsville were in company with him enroute for Texas where they propose settling. Captain McDuffie will be remembered as the gentleman who had during the war, a considerable controversy with General Howell Cobb in regard to a stean Mer sezed by the General on the Ocmulgeeriver while in command of this district. He was well known throughout this section, and his death has brought sadness to many hearts – Telegraph.
