Vol 8, #20, Thursday Morning, 14 May 1874: Obituary, Pages 52 & 53. Maj. John K. Whaley, age 75 yrs., died on Tuesday evening, 12th instant, at the residence of Mr. A. L. Tippett three miles from Hawkinsville. Maj. Whaley was a native of North Carolina but moved to Georgia at the age of eighteen and settled in Wilkinson County., where he married about 57 years ago. A few years afterward he moved to Sumter County and six years later to Pulaski County where he had lived for nearly 30 years. A short while before the he moved to Hamilton County, Florida, and in 1872 returned to this County. He is survived by his wife. He was buried at Antioch Church on Wednesday afternoon. Additional Comments: Compiler Notes: Major Whaley was born 1799 in North Carolina and died as stated (above). His wife Rebecca died 16 Sep 1877 (no further record). His daughter Cynthia Whaley (1826-1892) was married to Abner Linwood Tippett (1825- 1877). A contributor to Find A Grave has him listed in the Orange Hill Cemetery., Hawkinsville. He states they are related. He has to be in a unmarked grave as I researched this cemetery in the 1970’s and updated it in the 1990’s then the Central Georgia Genealogical published the Orange Hill Cemetery. His obituary of Thursday Morning, 8 Mar 1877 was found and it states he was buried at Orange Hill Cemetery with Masons of the Mount Hope Lodge being in charge at his grave side. I would assume Cynthia who died in 1892 is buried there also. I found no obituary on her.
