In the name of God amen I Alexander Martin being of sound mind but infirm boddy (sic) and being admonished that my desolution (sic) is approaching and may occur at any time make this my last will and testament. Article 1st- I will bequest that my earthly remains may be decently and appropriately consigned to the Tomb after my demise. Article 2nd – I will and request that all my just debts be paid. Article 3rd- I will and bequest that my enterprises in Old Hartford be sold as soon as practicable and that the mercantile business in which I am interested be closed up by the final day of January nigh—and that then the money arising from the sail (sic) of the said property go in to the coffers of my estate. Article 4th - I will and bequeath to my beloved wife Sara Jane Martin and also my minor children Charles Martin, Ann Elisa Martin, Caroline A Martin, (illegible) W. Martin, Franklin Martin, Thomas Martin, Frederick Martin and Henry Martin, who is to be specially cared for in his affliction and of his malady making it imposable (sic) to control him that he be taken to live safe and him (illegible?) to all of these. I give and bequest all(?) two (?) of Land containing four hundred and five acres of Land laying and being the in the twenty-first district – of adjoining Wilkingson (sic) County near Pulaski County numbers not know but known as that farm as the Hiram lot-and the Suttons lot— also six brace of (illegible ) horses and mules to be selected by beloved wife also fifty-head of (illegible??) Hogs, also six (ckoin ?) milk cows & calves with all the comi (?) and sudden and seed peas upon the place and five thousand pounds of porstle (?) all the (Lewishubb ?) property to be in fees simple Cut the land to go in to the cofers (sic) of my estate at the majority of my youngest child and be disposed of for distribution among my heirs none of the foregoing manner minors to be allowed to take any thing from the place upon attaining their majority or upon the marriage of tenth (?) of my minor daughters unless by count and permission of my beloved wife. Article 5th- I will and bequest that all my other property not herein innumerated of ever designation to be converted in to money as early as practicable for distribution among all my heirs. Artcle 6 _ I will and bequest that my dear beloved sons John A . Martin and John TL Martin act as Executors to this my last will and testament—on this Tuesday, 9th day of November 1866. The 10th 1866 In open court personally (illegible) G W Paterson who being duly sworn deposeth (sic) and saith that he saw Alex Martin late of said county declare openly freely and without compulsion sign and publish and declaim this the written instrument in writing be his last will and testament that at the time of sighning (sic) said instrument the said Alexander Martin was of sure and disposing mind and memory that he signed said instrument as a witness and said John H. Alexander Martin was married twice. It is thought that his first wife was Silvia Wilder but aside from mention in family notes, no documentation has been found to establish the first wife’s identity. His second wife was Sarah Jane who was much younger than he was. This is evident by examining the 1850 census and considering the ages of those in the household. His older sons were listed as executors but not heirs; his older married daughters were not mentioned (i.e., Margaret “Maggie” Martin McPhail Sheppard, who lived next door to him with her first husband during the 1860 census.
