Oct 8, 1832 Battle of Chancellorsville May 2-4, 1863 The Confederate victory at Chancellorsville, Virginia paved the way for the battle of Gettysburg. Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson led his men around the fortified position held by Union General Joseph Hooker's men. Jackson's men stampeded the right flanks while Confederate General Robert E. Lee led frontal attacks. During the confusion of battle General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was wounded by his own men. He later died of his wounds. On May 3rd General Lee attacked the Union Army which withdrew to defensive positions. On May 4th as Lee prepared to advance, Union General Joseph Hooker withdrew his army. The victory frustrated the Union's planes to attack Richmond and gave General Lee the opportunity to invade the north.
