STEVENS A.M.E. CHURCH (African American) St. Stevens A.M.E. Church was organized in 1921. A large wooden building with many windows on the sides was erected with the right side of the building facing Harrison Street. The land for the church was a gift from Mrs. Eddie Brannon. The first pastor was the Reverend Charlie Mosely and the Presiding Elder was Brother J. A. Butler. Mrs. Susie Manderville, Ms. Lucy Shorter, and the Reverend Lonza Jones were some of the early supporters of the church. It is believed that between 1940 and 1945 the top on the building went bad causing severe damage to the structure. As a result the church closed and remained closed for about thirty years. About 1972 Mrs. Mollie Rogers, Mrs. Mary Hicks, and Mr. Loyd Lewis felt the need to see St. Stevens reopen and once again active in the community. The old building was torn down and a new church constructed, this time facing Harrison Street with ample parking. Over a time period of about four years the work was completed and on the second Sunday in September of 1976, St. Stevens reopened. Services continue to be held on the second Sunday of each month and with the help of its sister churches, St. James and Shady Grove, attendance is good.
