CHURCH (African American) Davis Chapel A.M.E. Church was organized around 1892. For a few years meetings were held in a bush arbor as there was no money for a church building. From this bush arbor beginning in 1892, there has been a total of three structures erected. The first church was destroyed by a storm, which also killed a man in Eufaula, Alabama, on the 5th day of March in 1919. In May of 1919, a new building was started. Times were hard and money was tight, so this wooden frame building with a tin roof was not made to last and just gave out. About 1974 a new church was constructed, this time a block building was erected. Membership has been high but as with most country churches it has decreased over the years. Only two of the members of Davis Chapel are not of the age of retirement and hold jobs. Attendance is good at the services that are held one Sunday a month. In the old cemetery below the church you will find names that are on the church roll today as many of the members are sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters of the founding fathers. Erosion had begun on the hillside so it was determined that a new cemetery be started on the sides of the church.
