In 1833 Pataula Church had fifty-seven members. Some of the early members were: George Harrison, John N. Hatcher, William Hill, John Martin, J. S. Nash, and William Ross, a licensed preacher. It is possible that the John Ross buried in the Hatcher family cemetery was his son. In 1843 a part of the membership pulled out of the church and established a new church that was known as the Liberty Missionary Baptist Church. The premitive brethren that were left later moved the Pataula Church to the neighborhood of the McKenzie place. In the minutes of the 18th session of the Harmony Baptist Association that was held with the Antioch Church in Early County, Georgia in October of 1856, Pataula Church was shown as sending two delegates. They were A. Belcher and N. Paul. It was shown as being in Randolph County and having a Pataula Post Office address. It is assumed that all signs of the church were gone by the 1880's. This is the homeplace of my grandmother and there are no recollections of it being mentioned by her. The Cuthbert Times Quitman Co.
