JAMES A.M.E. CHURCH (African American) St. James A.M.E. Church held meetings in a bush arbor that overlooked the site of the first church building. It was near the cemetery that is yet in use by the church and can be found on the County Line Road. After a time it was decided to relocate the church. Land was purchased from Mr. H. P. Mason and a new church was erected. It was destroyed by a storm and rebuilt. Over the years a decline in membership has been seen due to the sparse country population. The church remains open and the Reverend Dan Davis of Columbus, Georgia, serves as pastor. Mrs. Henretta Cobb, aged eighty years, said as a child she helped carry lunch to her father at the first location. He, along with several other men were working on the church roof. She does not know if they were reroofing an older building or finishing the first church. Mrs. Catherine F. Carter "Cemeteries and Churches of Quitman County, Georgia" by Jacquelyn M.
