B. Burton forming the Presbytery. It was first known as New Hope Baptist Church. In 1844 New Hope Church presented itself to the Bethel Association for membership at its session held with Friendship Church, Sumter County. The delegates to the Association were J. O. Wooley and S. Day. The first house of worship was built near a spring in front of the house where W. D. Hammack now lives. Later it was moved below Coleman opposite the cemetery. In 1888 the church was moved to Coleman and the name changed from New Hope Church to Coleman Baptist Church. The lot on which the church stands was given by W. T. Rogers and the lot in front of the church was given by T. Muse. The first pastor was R. Thornton in 1848. W. W. Rhodes served as clerk. The following pastors have served the church since its organization: R. Thornton from 1848 to 1857. During these years he baptized one hundred and twenty five into the church. A. P. Mitchell in 1857 and 1858 baptized 31. W. R. Thornton in 1859 with 3 baptisms. A. P. Mitchell in 1860, baptisms 30; R. Thornton in 1861 with no baptisms; 1862, no report; 1863 and 1864 R. Thornton baptized 4; in 1865 J. Martin served as pastor and baptized 38; 1866, no report; from 1867 to 1870 W. T. Crawford was pastor with 2 baptisms; J. C. Bass baptized 10 in the church during the years 1870 and 1871. No report in 1872; W. E. Crawford in 1873 served as pastor, no baptisms; No report in 1875 and 1876; L. Culbreth was pastor in 1877 and baptized 12; T. Muse served the church from 1878 to 1881 and baptized 15; H. R. McLendon as pastor in 1881 baptized 1; F. C. Johnson in 1882 baptized 2 H. L. Crumbley as pastor from 1883 to 1887 baptized 11; R. B. Taylor was pastor in 1887 and 1888, the total number of baptisms being 5; J. S. Knowles from 1889 to 1893 baptized into the church 20 members. No report in 1894, 1895; In 1897 and 1898 J. H. Corley served as pastor, no baptisms; no report in 1899; W. W. Arnold from 1900 to 1904 baptized 19. 1905, B. W. Davis was pastor, 3 baptisms; W. W. Arnold in 1906 and 1907 with 13 baptisms; J. A. Ivey in 1908, no baptisms; P. C. Barclay from 1909 to 1914 baptized 35 into the church; in 1914 and 1915 J. A. Ivey served as pastor, 14 baptisms; no report in 1916; C. S. Durden in 1918 and 1919 with 7 baptisms; no report in 1920; J. W. Snelson from 1921 to 1926 baptized 26; no pastor in 1926; J. W. Harper in 1927 and 1928 with 7 baptisms; Eugene Eller in 1929 and 1930 baptized 4; A. B. Hawkes serve as pastor in 1931 and 1932 with 4 baptisms. The following clerks have served the Coleman Baptist Church: T. W. Jones from 1851 to 1856; J. H. Calloway from 1856 to 1859; B. Thornton in 1859 T. S. Douglas in 1860 and 1861; no report in 1862; T. S. Douglas in 1863 and 1864; W. C. Bass in 1865; no report in 1866; T. Douglas in 1867 and 1868; W. F. Davis in 1869 and 1870; W. B. Cox in 1871; no report in 1872.W. D. Hammack in 1873; no report in 1874 and 1875; W. D. Hammack from 1876 to 1885; C. A. Etheridge in 1885; R. E. Brown in 1886 and 1887; A. S. Martin in 1888 and 1889; J. G. Hammack in 1890 and 1891; J. J. Hammack in 1892 and 1893; no report in 1894, 1895 and 1896; J. J. Hammack in 1897; A. J. Jones in 1898; no report in 1899; A. J. Jones from 1900 to 1903; R. G. Hammack from 1903 to 1907; J. B. Beauchamp and W. J. Day from 1907 to 1911; O. J. Rhodes in 1911; C. A. Brown from 1912 to 1919; No report in 1920; C. A. Brown from 1921 to 1924; A. W. Dawson from 1924 to 1929; M. Day from 1929 to the present time. The Coleman Baptist Church is ninety years old. The total number of pastors is 28, baptisms 423, and clerks 26. The Association met with the Coleman Baptist Church in 1892 and 1912. The present membership of the church is 159. In 1928 the church was remodeled and Sunday School rooms were added. The value of the church property is $6000.00.
